As Allen suggested, logs may be helpful answering that but I'd prefer
logs generated using the distribution's package over a git snapshot.
This ought to do the trick for the epson backend.

   SANE_DEBUG_EPSON=127 scanimage  image 2 epson.log

Just replace the backend names for epson2 and/or epkowa.

This is very weired - first I have to say, that I by far is a
programmer, I'm mostly on the list, because I participate in the
 localization.

I had been using the scanner with the 1.0.19 'install', and then I did a
upgrade to the 1.0.21 - and it still works. See epson2.log

Then I turned the scanner off, and later back on (without having the
computer turned off) and it still replied to the 'debug' script.
So I started the Xsane, but it could not find any scanner.
Then I ran the Yast-setup program for the scanner, and it found the
scanner, but could not install it.

I then installed the newest version of iscan (2 - both the data and
driver pakage) - still no go.

Back to the 1.0.19 and all is working again - see epson2-19.log

My conclusion is, that it's not the epson2 package/driver that is the
problem, but somewhere in the Suse system (in Suse 11.2 and earlier
versions I had manually to ad user rights to the scanner. This is fixed
 in 11.3) - there are 2 packages, the sane-backens and a
sane-backends-autoconfig. I have tried to only upgrade the sane-backends
 package, but no difference.

Both the logs that you attached looked fine. There does not seem to be
anything wrong with the epson2 backend in this case. I agree with your
conclusion and suggest you submit a bug report with SUSE.

Hope this helps,

There have been very few changes to epson backend since 1.0.19, so I
am surprised it did not work in later versions.

The changes in the epson backend between 1.0.19 and 1.0.20 and between
1.0.20 and 1.0.21 are so trivial there is no reason that that backend no
longer works with either scanner mentioned below.
Of course, it doesn't get built with 1.0.21 so people are stuck with
the epson2 backend.

Epson2 has a known issue in 1.0.21, which is still waiting on a fix,
 IIRC.

This bug is fairly annoying. It affects are growing number of Epson
scanners. Any idea when a fix will be forthcoming?

People could alternatively try the epkowa backend which comes with Image
Scan! for Linux. Available from:

  http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/

Just make sure you pick the download menu that corresponds to your type
of device. Models for the Japanese market are available via:

  http://avasys.jp/download/

Any chance you could get a log of the epson2 backend from a current
 git snapshot?

The Epson Stylus CX3200 is not listed anywhere on our download pages but
if you select the CX3500 you should be fine. Note though that Image
Scan! for Linux has not been pushed through our testing program with the
CX3200. Also, we have not done any testing on MEPIS.

Are you sure the epson backend is included in SUSE's sane-backends
1.0.21 package? If so,

I tried to use the driver from package 'iscan-free' - no help.

The latest upstream version for Image Scan! for Linux (iscan) is 2.25.0.
 What version is SUSE's iscan-free?
You could give the latest upstream iscan packages a spin.

The scanner gets recognized by setup, but at use, different types
of errors, mostly Xsane just terminates.

I started to go backwards in 'history', and when I reached
 sane-backends 1.0.19-99, it works again.

Which backend(s)? The epson backend, epson2 or both?

Why this - is it a bug, and where/how to go on?

As Allen suggested, logs may be helpful answering that but I'd prefer

Hello list

I have for some years now used my Epson Perfection 2450 Photo (or -
