Re: [sane-devel] Epson WorkForce DS-1630
Hi Olaf ! Thank you very much. It will help in making our minds in buying a new scanner... Yes, my mother had first a scanner Canon 5600F (https://alioth.debian.org/tracker/?group_id=30186=410366=detail=315609) ; because it was recognised by no-one except by Linux, my mother bought a new scanner which scan 1 line instead of 2 lines... She changed it with the Epson XP-435 which was enable to work properly... each time she wanted to use it, that never works and I had to download and to install the drivers each time I go and see her... Now she is really fed up and wants to be sure, if she buys a new one, it will happen nothing wrong and she can use her scanner each times she wants and without asking me to help her. As far as the scanner Canon 5600F is concerned, I have to do 3 tests to let it probably work... if I can't, she will buy a new scanner with angry this time... Have a nice day ! It was so upsetting that we throught it away and bought a new Printer (Canon IP110) and now we are looking for a scanner which works with Linux (Image Scan V3 doesn't run properly in Linux and was enable to recognise this d.. scanner !!!). That's https://alioth.debian.org/tracker/index.php?func=detail=315720_id=30186=410366 right? Sorry that didn't work out for you. As far as the WorkForce DS-1630 is concerned I've read that SANE doesn't run with USB3 ? and in the french description (easier to read when we are Frenches) I read that this one is just working with USB-3... SANE does work with USB-3 in a large number of cases but sometimes people run into trouble. This most often happens with old versions of libsane and/or older Linux kernel versions. If the DS-1630 truly only works with USB-3, then you should check the USB ports on your computer first. If those aren't USB-3, there is no point in buying a DS-1630. That said, USB-3 devices should fall back to using USB-2 (e.g. if the computer only has USB-2 ports) and still work but with a possible decrease in data throughput (i.e. your scans will go slower). That's because, unfortunately, EPSON does not provide information linking model names to USB product IDs and SANE does not include third party backend information in that page :-( If EPSON provided the linking information, I'd be able to create a much more useful utsushi.desc file. And if SANE added third party backends to those pages, you'd actually be able to find it. # We could do something about the latter though.
