Ah, that is a different problem. I thought your question was how to use a (supported) scanner via network with SANE. To find out if your scanner is supported at all (there are a few HP backends) I'm afarid you will have to connect it to a (FreeBSD) machine via usb and run sane-find-scanner as root. If it isn't supported by SANE, there is always HPLIP (http://www.freshports.org/print/hplip/) as already mentioned in this thread. HTH -- Regards, Torfinn Ingolfsen

FWIW, this is how I do it for my scanner: driver:net: for example: xsane epson2:net:10.1.161.8 gscan2pdf --device epson2:net:10.1.161.8 And yes, this is also under FreeBSD. HTH -- Regards, Torfinn Ingolfsen
[sane-devel] Using a network scanner...?
Hello, I have a networked HP-4500 Officejet printer/scanner and I'm using FreeBSD 9.2. All the documentation I've seen seems to think the connection must be USB. (I have seen sane-net but have been able to download only the man page). The printer is properly connected and CUPS can print to it for example. Though consumer-level scanners such as this one are overwhelmingly USB, there must be lots of network scanners out there...?? TIA Bernard Higonnet

I think this machine is supported by the hplip project, not by sane. You would have to ask them how to connect to the scanner over the network. allan On Mon, Mar 3, 2014 at 6:28 AM, Bernard T.
