[sane-devel] improve HP scanner support information

2010-02-10 Thread m. allan noah
I have just pulled the hpaio.desc file from hplip v 3.9.12.
Unfortunately, this file does not give any information about the
connection type or usb ID's, so users that search our form using those
will not find the scanners. Those that search by name should show up.

It would be nice if this could be provided occasionally by HP directly to us.

 Hello,

At least the current HPLIP version 3.9.8 sources contain a
 scan/sane/hpaio.desc
file which is - as far as I see - exactly what is needed.

I think the only missing link is someone at HPLIP who
actually sends their current up-to-date hpaio.desc file
 to the SANE project people.

If the hplip guys would make a .desc file for their backend, we would
put it in our site, and it would show up in the search engine. The
Epkowa guys do this. Perhaps you could ask hplip...

HPLIP (hplipopensource.com) has scanner support for all HP multi-function
scanner/printers such as HP Deskjet, HP Photosmart, and HP Laserjet.
 ?SANE
 has little support.
SANE has support for HP Scanjet and all single-function scanners. ?HPLIP
 does not.

There seems to be a division of labor here.
HPLIP and SANE ?drivers integrate into Ubuntu and Xsane. ?They are both
installed by default in Ubuntu--but I didn't know about the HPLIP
 drivers.
?I needed to go to the HPLIP site because I had a new printer/scanner,
 and
 needed the newest driver download.

I notice that HPLIP has a link to SANE for single-function scanners.
Can we get a link added to the SANE web site?

[sane-devel] improve HP scanner support information

2009-09-17 Thread David Fourer
Allan,

I see what you mean. My suggestion--for us end-user guys who are not
programmers--would be to add the words Deskjet series, Photosmart
series, and Laserjet series to the HP listings ordered by printer type
(http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html). Then leave all the fields
blank except the comment.

Link to the downloads page -- hplipopensource.com -- This has all the
user info, the download, and FAQ stuff. It's user-friendly. The notes
under HPAIO link to the sourceforge page, and it's quite confusing to me.

I'm just trying to help the next person who comes along. I got the help
I needed and I want to make it easier for the next person. I hope this
makes sense.
