client is looking for a Performance Engineer who can Coordinate with the
Architecture Team to gain a broad and deep understanding of project.
Understand functional / technical architecture and
infrastructure layout
Purpose: Look for potential bottlenecks in construction of the
application. This also provides information that will be used to
throttle performance tests and expose weaknesses in the architecture.
Define metrics to be collected by Hyperic and Actional
monitoring tools
Hyperic is part of the SpringTC suite, which monitors the
Application Server. NGOE is based on SpringTC, a new technology being
introduced. Previously, this would have been BEA.
Our SOA platform will be using SpringTC application server
technology. Actional (by Progress Software) is the SOA Security product
being used at all levels within the infrastructure. It adds an inherent
latency to every web-service call. So identifying the latency,
capturing it, and throttling the infrastructure is an important step.
The scope of this engagement will be to provide drive the performance test
planning and implementation. Key tasks and activities will include:
Discovery & Planning:
* Coordinate with the Architecture Team to gain a broad and deep
understanding of project
* Catalog performance metrics from existing PowerLink service
level objectives ("SLOs")
* Document NGOE SLOs and performance targets
* Identify Performance Risks from current design (i.e., lack of
SLOs, application server/cluster configuration and resourcing, first SOA
implementation, first use of tc Server, new authentication & entitlement
models, etc.)
* Define the workload characterization and document key usage
scenarios for end-to-end testing
* Define metrics to be collected by Hyperic and Actional
monitoring tools
* Investigate and recommend additional tools if needed
* Develop initial performance test plan
Implementation:
* Support configuration of the performance environment.
* Support performance test script development, test execution, and
analysis as required
* Participate in system and environment tuning and recommend steps
for performance improvements
The following deliverables will be produced:
1. Performance Test Plan - This document will outline the
components and functions of the architecture, prioritized by risk, and
will list test scenarios, performance targets, and approach for testing
that are in-scope for NGOE. The performance test plan will also
document environment monitoring, test data, and test resource
requirements.
2. Checkpoint Review - Covers resource roles and responsibilities
for the performance test implementation.
3. Workload Models - This will include spreadsheet models that
capture expected workload volumes and transaction mix for the
application. These models will serve as key inputs into the testing
scenario targets.
