Hi,

I am reviewing your submission on behalf of Savannah. English is the official
language for communication on this site and all mailing lists, so please
change the description (or resubmit the project if this is not possible), and
we will continue with the review, OK?

Thanks!

[Savannah-register-public] [task #10481] Submission of GeoCite

Hi Georg,

Sorry for the delay. I am reviewing your submission on behalf of Savannah. To
answer your question first: There are no coding requirements on Savannah. Your
code is fine. Also, you comply with most hosting requirements; just add a
reference to the license to the USER MANUAL.TXT file and it should be fine.

I have a few suggestions to improve manageability:
* You might want to put everything inside a single compressed file, and have
everything uncompressed there. Right now there is a bit of a mess with
tarballs inside tarballs; source code is separate from the distributable
file.
* Names with spaces are a bit of a mess to type on Linux; it's better to use
slashes like USER-MANUAL.TXT. Also consider lowercase for everything but
README.TXT and LICENSE.TXT; and include the README.TXT for high level
explanations about the package.
* The top folder should include the license number, something like:
GeoCite-0.9. You have that inside GeoCite package; just do GeoCite-0.9
the top folder.

If you want I may approve the submission and you can deal with these issues
in the Savannah version control system. Let me know, OK?

Thanks, Alex.

Sorry, I meant GNU/Linux instead of just Linux; the full name helps outsiders
know about the GNU project role in creating the full Unix clone, instead of
giving all credit to the Linux kernel.

Hi Paul,

Sorry for the delay; there is a bit of a backlog after the summer Holidays. I
am reviewing your submission on behalf of Savannah, and there are a few issues
with it:
* You speak about Linux, but we prefer that you use GNU/Linux: it gives
credit to the GNU project besides the Linux kernel. Read the Hosting
requirements https://savannah.gnu.org/register/requirements.php for more
details.
* Some documentation files (NEWS, README, Changelog...) lack the required GPL
header.
* There are a few PNG files in there, but it's not clear where they come
from. The best solution is usually to state in the README or some similar file
the license for each one.

Please upload a new tarball with these issues solved, and let us know when
it's ready for a new review, OK?

Finally, you say that Quagga is a fork of GNU Zebra; while forks are
sometimes necessary (and GNU Zebra seems to have stopped development in 2005),
it might be better to help the original package move along. Have you contacted
the authors of GNU Zebra, and/or the GNU project, to see if they would like
some contributors?

Thanks, Alex.

Hi Aubrey,

Sorry for the delay, there is a bit of backlog after the summer Holidays. I
am reviewing your submission on behalf of Savannah, but since there is no code
to review there is little we can do to move forward. I suggest that you close
this submission and resubmit when you are ready.

As to the status of binary data, you might want to ask your question on the
savannah-hackers-public mailing list for an authoritative answer. From my
limited understanding as a non-lawyer, the legal status of raw data is that it
cannot be copyrighted in the US. In the EU raw data (like phone databases) can
be copyrighted by the organization collecting the data, so it would be enough
to have a written statement from Dr Vacca to the effect that the data are
placed in the public domain (a file distributed along with the tarball would
be enough). The status of the program used to generate the data is not
important, as it just follows a mathematical model which cannot be
copyrighted. But again, please subscribe to savannah-hackers-public
https://savannah.gnu.org/mail/?group=administration if you want to be sure.

Thanks, Alex.

Hi.

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in GNU Savannah.
You can reach the rest Savannah hackers (Staff) in this list:
http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/savannah-hackers-public.

I noticed some issues with the tarball you submited:

Several files lack its copyright licensing information.

In order to release your project properly and unambiguously under the
GNU GPL, please place copyright notices and permission-to-copy
statements at the beginning of every copyrightable file, usually any
file more than 10 lines long.

In addition, if you haven't already, please include a copy of the
plain text version of the GPL, available from
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt, into a file named COPYING.

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.

If some of your files cannot carry such notices (e.g. binary files),
then you can add a README file in the same directory containing the
copyright and license notices. Check
http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html for
further information.

The GPL FAQ explains why these procedures must be followed. To learn
why a copy of the GPL must be included with every copy of the code,
for example, see
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WhyMustIInclude.

~~

At your option we can continue the registration process in the (D)VCS
repository of your choise. This means I would approve the project
just now provided you agree to fix any remaining or further issue (If
any) as soon as possible.

I will close this task when I can check all is ok but please bear in
mind you must follow the hosting requirements as long as you do use
GNU Savannah.

Regards.

Hi Florent,

Please excuse the long delay. I am evaluating your submission on behalf of
Savannah, and there are a few issues that need addressing before we can move
along with it:
* A few files do not have the license header, such as HOWTO.txt and
README.txt.
* Also, the file texture.png does not have a license attached; it would be
best if all binary files and the appropriate license are listed in the
README.
* As a convenience, you might consider placing all source code inside a
folder (called e.g. src/); the sooner your project is organized the better.
* Also, allow me to suggest the GPL license for the project; it helps ensure
that everyone using the code shares their improvements. But this is of course
up to you.

Could you upload a corrected tarball and let us know? Thanks!

Alex.

Hi Isaac,

Sorry for the delay, I am evaluating your submission on behalf of Savannah.
There are a few issues that should be solved before we can move along:
* All of your code is in the root level of the tar file. It is better to
create a directory with your project name and version (example:
ai-working-0.1) and compress that directory instead.
* The README file just says that it is not official. It would be best to
include a description of the project and the license used in the project (and
a license header).
* There is not much code yet; we can create the project on Savannah and you
start hacking on that, but you need to make sure that all of it follows the
hosting requirements https://savannah.gnu.org/register/requirements.php.
* Also, the tarball should be compressed to make the best use of Savannah
infrastructure.

Please upload a new tarball and let us know. Thanks!

Alex.
