For some material you'll probably need packages not available in the sl repos. If so, enable suitable third party repo (most likely rpmforge, available via yum-conf-rpmforge). gstreamer-ffmpeg is a likely candidate for most needs (probably... possibly... maybe).

It unlocks with no trouble but is annoying. I'm using KDE-unstable. Others have reported time-related locks and/or claimed fixes. Try it.
