SL 5.4 freeze on 1st boot when "setting hostname"
SL 5.4 Kernel 2.6.18-164.2.1.e15 x86_64 Samsung Q45 Hello! I've managed to install SL 5.4 from DVDs but cannot boot into the system. The boot sequence freezes when reaching or shortly after "setting hostname [OK]". I've tried booting with nousb set and rhgb disabled, to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks! _ Looking for a date? Re: Resolution and (default) packages?
Okay, now that I have the system configured properly and have finished 'taking inventory'... of the newest SL, back to my initial inquiry, part B: B. 'Scientific' software packages: I thought SL default-installed a whole hoard of scientific/education packages, as those I seem to recall from v 4.3 or older. Where can I get these? I recall a much earlier version of SL, (perhaps 4.2 or less from a couple years ago, that had REAL scientific applications, perhaps many used in college level or, more likely, real laboratory research. So, what happen ed to SL since then? Was it not finding a 'following'? Honestly re. 5.4, my kids were literally laughing last night at the array of "scientific" apps in SL. [Of course my 10th-grade son is taking 5 honors courses (college level) in private school, and my younger daughter has a habit of beating him in everything, "bless their hearts".] Only I stayed up last night to play w/ Kstars on SL and an old telescope, at least until I realized I believe Stellarium- under another distro -has an 'edge' over K stars. Just not really sure what SL has been doing... i.e: Where are those real scientific apps!!? Somewhat dismayed at the use of "scientific" in current SL. Al
Re: yum update fails dependency check
Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately still no luck. I was a little brief in my first post so a little more info. I am using SL 5.3 and have kept it updated. Until now I have not had any problems applying distributed updates/patches. "yum clean all" followed by several other tests gave no new information and all ended with the same error See bottom of first post). minicom problem
Hi, I am using SL 5.4 (2.6.18-164.6.1.el5, x86_64, no i386 at all) and have a problem with using minicom as a standard user. I would appreciate any hel p! I have a user named "usv" which is in two groups - usv and uucp. I instal led minicom and when I first tried running it, minicom asked me to create a default file in /etc by running "minicom -s" as root. I did that and coul d run minicom without any problems as root. However, when I run "minicom -s " as user usv, and try to change serial port settings, I am not allowed to change the serial port setting. I get a message "You are not allowed to change this parameter". I am allowed to change only options E, F and G (baud, parity, number of bits and flow control). I tried searching on internet about this, but could not get any answer. I was wondering if I a m missing any group/permissions etc and would really appreciate any help! Thanks.

And it's the most frequently ask question about SL -> https://www.scientificlinux.org/documentation/faq/general1 Q. Where are all the 'science' programs? Q. Is Scientific Linux better for scientific applications? A. This linux distribution is called Scientific Linux because it is made by scientific labs, for scientific labs and universities. It is not named Scientific Linux because it has the largest collection of scientific programs. It was named back when it was small, and only the scientific labs were using it. Cheers, Urs
