I just wish there was one clear winner among the distros for audio, instead of the plethora of audio architectures out there, but I digress ... According to the skype webpage's support section here: http://www.skype.com/help/guides/soundsetup_linux.html Quote: > OSS (Open Sound System): The oldest sound support available in Linux. > This type is natively supported by Skype. > ALSA is more modern than OSS. Anyone every tried to configure either the OSS emulation layer for alsa, or alternatively used the ESD method? I tried looking for an alsa emulation layer for OSS support, but a quick search in SL repositories returned no results for the keyword 'oss'. I'm running GNOME so I have esd installed, but I get this: > $ esd -d /dev/dsp > - using device /dev/dsp > ALSA lib pcm.c:2144:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM /dev/dsp Also, I tried > $ esddsp ./skype with no errors, but I still can't hear my recorded message when I use the test service. I'm not sure what to do now, but I thought this e-mail might jog someone's memory on how it could be done? Regards, Craig

No Outgoing Sound with Skype
Hi, I've been trying to use skype (unsucessfully) for some time. I've googled, looked at bugs, and read through forms with no luck. I can hear the audio fine, and I've tested the microphone using alsamixer and it works. However, when I make a test call I can hear the prerecorded message, but when I record my message it isn't repeated so there is no outgoing audio. I've read somewhere that there might be a problem with my firewall?!? If so, then how would I check? Here are my details: Skype 2.0.0.72 OS SL5.2.x86_64 alsa-utils 1.0.14-3.rc4.el5.x86_64 Sound Card: Intel 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Computer OPTIPLEX 755 DT : INTEL CORE 2 QUAD Q660 I'd appreciate any help you could provide. I've > made a soft link to evince from where acroread would normally be called, > and haven't had a freeze yet. I constantly have this problem. I have to run: $ ps -e | grep acroread to get the pid number and then $ kill -KILL to kill the process. I figured it was an acrobat problem rather than SL. It mostly happens whenever I run acrobat from inside firefox. If I navigate way from the page where the pdf file is, the acroread process continues running and eventually freezes my system. This is especially true if I try to open two pdf files from inside firefox. I have to keep an eye on my activity indicator. If it starts showing lots of activity, then I know acroread is running in the background and its time to start killing. Maybe someone else has a less brute force method of dealing with this? Re: How can I install Skype on SL 5.0 ?
Pedro, For me I used the 'static' version, follow the instructions included with the tar file. Unfortunately, the audio mixer in SL doesn't allow for Skype calls so I just use it to send IMs. (If anyone has had success configuring skype for calls, then please let me know how you did it!) However, I did run across this bug which sounds like the one you're suffering from. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=468425 You probably should post your problems there so they can help you out. The status is closed, but I think it was closed only because the original person who opened the bug resolved it by using his computer at a work, which makes me think it may be related to your internet settings in some way. Good luck, Craig

I can confirm that it is a valid URL and I could open it in firefox. If you can't open it, then you likely need to check your internet or firewall settings.
