Before spending your money, you might just try any number of online
resources.  Google is your friend.

A few sites that come to mind immediately are:

And since you're running SL6.x, which is really Red Hat Enterprise 6,

To permanently change your hostname that will survive the reboot,
you will have to edit the file /etc/sysconfig/network.

To permanently change your hostname that will survive the reboot, you will
have to edit the file /etc/sysconfig/network.

the command:
$ hostname lappy
is just a temporary change.

The actual file to change your hostname is:

I'd have just copied and pasted the output of the ls command personally.

I forgot that most people don't kill NetworkManager out of habit; you can stick 
a send directive into /etc/dhclient.conf; see the man page for exact syntax, it 
escapes me at the moment.

Throw dhcp_hostname=your.hostname.here into 
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 or equivalent for your system.
