In tests we found that the sl52 installer kernel happy enough on i7 desktop machines - but there are i7 specific improvements listed in the changelogs of the kernels for sl53 (those are available as security updates for sl52 anyway)... Ken, We had trouble running SL 5.2 with Intel I7 processor and the Asus PT6 MB (x58 Intel chipset). We had no troubles using SL 5.3 though. I have logged into one beta machine where someone had it working. I didn't do the install myself so not sure if any magic was required.
