SL release number

2010-08-02 Thread Michèle Perucic

Hi,

I have installed SL 5.2 a couple of years ago and since then my system
is always up to date.

I also have the latest kernel (2.6.18-194.8.1.el5).
The question is: Why does the release still show up as 5.2 (and not 5.5)?

# lsb_release -id
Distributor ID: ScientificSL
Description:Scientific Linux SL release 5.2 (Boron)

Thanks,
Michele

I think this FAQ page would help:

By the way I remember there is a yum-conf-5x to stay with the
latest release (I used it for 4x) but I don't remeber how to
   install it.

I tried with yum and rpm without success :

    jones:{root}:/etc > yum install yum-conf-5x
   ...

   Transaction Check Error:
file /etc/yum.conf from install of yum-conf-5x-1-8.SL.noarch conflicts
with file from package yum-conf-54-1.SL.noarch

    jones:{root}:/etc > rpm -Uvh
/var/cache/yum/sl-base/packages/yum-conf-5x-1-8.SL.noarch.rpm
   ...
file /etc/yum.conf from install of yum-conf-5x-1-8.SL.noarch conflicts
with file from package yum-conf-54-1.SL.noarch

   Shall I remove yum-conf first ?

   Thanks for your help.

Hello,

As for the origianl question, lsb_release takes the version from
/etc/redhat-release, which is provided by package sl-release
(version 5.5 for SL 5.5).
To see its info
rpm -qf /etc/redhat-release -i

Best regards,
Gregory
