26 Routine Home Maintenance Jobs Everyone Should Do ... But Most Everyone Forgets to Do by www.SixWise.com http://www.sixwise.com/ You've heard of spring http://www.sixwise.com/newsletters/06/03/15/how_to_spring_clean_your_home_t o_best_prevent_physical_disease__amp_emotional_distress.htm cleaning? Well, fall is an ideal time to conduct the important home maintenance tasks you've been meaning to do all year. Just as your car requires regular oil changes and tune-ups to run its best, your home needs a few tweaks and replacements to keep it up to par. But, unlike your car, which you likely take to a mechanic, you can perform most of these top home maintenance jobs yourself. test your fire alarms http://www.sixwise.com/images/articles/2007/09/12/34489555%5B1%5D.thb.jpg You should test your fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, clean them and change the batteries regularly. Taking these simple measures now could payoff big time in the future by helping you to avoid costly problems and protect one of your biggest investments: your home. 1. Check the grout around all tiled wet areas, including your shower, tub and kitchen sink, and add caulk to the joints if you notice any areas of separation (or if it hasn't been done in awhile). 2. Have your heating system inspected by a professional before the heating season begins (in the spring, you can do this with your air conditioner). 3. Check your dryer vent exhaust system for blockage and to ensure the connection. Remove any lint buildup from the vents. 4. Check the hoses of your washing machine for cracks and leaks. 5. Check and replace the batteries in your carbon http://www.sixwise.com/newsletters/04/12/12/the_six_silent_killers_in_your_ home_how_to_detect_and_eliminate_them_004.htm monoxide detectors and fire alarms. Test and clean the detectors as well. 6. Remove hoses from outside spigots prior to cold weather to prevent freezing. 7. Insulate all exterior wall water pipes (in kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, shower, etc.) to avoid frozen pipes bursting this winter (one of the top causes of home flooding and serious damage to valued belongings). 8. Replace your furnace filter (and air conditioner filter). This should be done monthly. 9. Check your drain traps for blockage, and clean them by removing any excess debris. (Do this twice a year.) Rather than just pushing dust and dirt around, or worse, stirring it up into the air, all PerfectClean products are made with positively charged ultramicrofibers that pick up everything in their path -- including the biological and toxic contaminants that no other cleaning tool or solution can touch. If you have a coil-back refrigerator, pull it away from the wall and vacuum the condenser coils to remove dust. (Do this twice a year if you have pets.) 12. Drain and refill your hot water heater (yearly). Remove any sediment from the bottom of the tank. 13. If you have a sump pump, make sure it's operating correctly. Clean the sump basket with a bleach solution to disinfect it. 14. Check the filter on your range hood and clean it as needed. 15. If you have a whirlpool tub, clean the system out by running a solution of dishwasher soap and bleach through it. 16. Make sure the pressure relief valve on your water heater is working. 17. Turn on the pilot light in your gas furnace. 18. Make sure all of your exterior doors shut tightly. Replace the door's weather-stripping if necessary. 19. Check your chimney for debris, such as birds' nests. Clean the ashes out of your fireplace http://www.sixwise.com/newsletters/06/11/08/the_top_10_dangers_of_fireplace s_what_every_fireplace_user_should_know.htm . household maintenance hoses http://www.sixwise.com/images/articles/2007/09/12/34591551%5B1%5D.thb.jpg Before cold weather arrives, remove your hoses from their outside spigots or they could freeze, causing damage. 20. Change the washers in any leaky faucets. 21. Clean your gutters and drain pipes to ensure they're not blocked by debris. Make sure they drain away from the house. Also remove any limbs or bunched up leaves from your roof as they could create a dam, causing water or ice to back up into your roof shingles. This could result in a flooded ceiling and water damage come
[scifinoir2] FW: [Blackfolks] The Full Disclosure / Early Offer Movement: What it Could Mean for You if You Ever Suffer a Medical Mistake
Maurice Jennings Have you or someone you know been threatened with foreclosure? KEEP your home and Stop Foreclosure in its Tracks! Get a Free, No Obligation Evaluation = http://www.legacyhomesavers.com http://www.legacyhomesavers.com/ _ From: Maurice C. Jennings [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, September 15, 2007 4:48 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Blackfolks] The Full Disclosure / Early Offer Movement: What it Could Mean for You if You Ever Suffer a Medical Mistake The Full Disclosure / Early Offer Movement: What it Could Mean for You if You Ever Suffer a Medical Mistake by www.SixWise.com http://www.sixwise.com/ A concept called full disclosure / early offer is spreading through the health care field like a wildfire. In short, the movement encourages -- and in some states even grants legal rights to -- doctors and other health care personnel to apologize after they've made a medical mistake. medical error http://www.sixwise.com/images/articles/2007/09/12/34588718%5B1%5D.thb.jpg It's anger, not greed, that drives most patients to take legal action when a medical error occurs, according to the Sorry Works! Coalition. Traditionally, doctors were discouraged, to put it lightly, from saying much of anything about a medical mishap for fear that it could be used against them in litigation. Instead of full disclosure / early offer, the preferred course of action was more like a policy of defend and deny. It was commonplace, meanwhile, for patients to receive only partial information or misinformation altogether regarding what occurred, for instance being told they had an allergic reaction to anesthetic when, in reality, too much had been given. Medical errors in hospitals alone cause 44,000 to 98,000 deaths in the United States each year, according to the Institute of Medicine. This makes them the eighth leading cause of death in the country. By allowing doctors to apologize for mistakes, and take any necessary remedial action right away, the theory is that it will cut back on the amount of medical practice lawsuits. Further, this practice also makes reporting medical errors much easier, since the mistake is already out in the open. Many medical errors currently go unreported, even though becoming aware of the mistakes that are occurring would likely help to prevent them from happening again in the future. In fact, while most doctors say they do want to be honest, fewer than half will reveal serious errors they have made, according to an August 2006 study in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Health care providers willing to admit when they have made an error and quickly get on top of it ... cut down on the anger that leads to litigation ... Patients bring lawsuits when they can't get answers, says Doug Wojcieszak, founder of The Sorry Works! Coalition, an advocacy group aimed at publicizing and implementing the full disclosure / early offer concept. Full Disclosure / Early Offer Spurs Positive Changes More than 30 states have adopted laws that will protect a doctor's apology from being used in a trial. Further, hospitals across the United States are adding policies that actually require doctors and nurses to disclose medical errors and offer apologies to the patients and families affected. In many cases, financial settlements are also offered upfront. The University of Michigan Health System is one such hospital that has begun using a policy that encourages full disclosure of medical errors and apologies to patients. full disclosure policy http://www.sixwise.com/images/articles/2007/09/12/34524486%5B1%5D.thb.jpg Upon adopting a full disclosure policy for medical errors, the University of Michigan Health System saw pre-suit claims and lawsuits decrease from 260 in July 2001 to fewer than 100 in January 2007. Since they have implemented these changes, the number of pre-suit claims and lawsuits has decreased from 260 pending in July 2001 to fewer than 100 in January 2007. Further, the average amount spent on legal fees for each case has fallen more than 50 percent. In all, litigation costs fell from an average of $65,000 per case to $35,000 per case, which resulted in a total average annual savings of $2 million to the hospital. The average time it took to resolve claims and lawsuits also fell dramatically, from 20.7 months in 2001 to 9.5 months in 2005. Similarly, the largest malpractice insurer in Colorado, COPIC, enrolled 1,800 physicians in a program that required them to express remorse to patients for medical care gone wrong, along with explain in detail what happened. Meanwhile, the insurer paid for the patients' related expenses. As a result, malpractice claims against the 1,800 doctors dropped by 50 percent from 2000 to 2005, and the cost of settling the doctors' claims fell by 23 percent. Many doctors really want to be open and apologize to patients, but are led to believe it can end up in financial

Looks great, really. I'll be sure to check it out on PPV when it comes up. Those lines on Supes' face look kinda Kirby-esque, a la New Gods. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This one caught me completely off guard. Bruce Timm--the genius behind the Batman, Superman, and Justice League cartoons--has done an animated movie based on the excellent Death of Superman comic series. The movie's out on DVD and pay-per-view next Tuesday. The animation looks slightly different from most of Timm's work (the lines on Supes' face are odd), perhaps not quite as good, but still good. Voice cast is completely different. Really jarring to hear James Marsters (Spike from Buffy) as Lex Luthor, instead of Clancy Brown. The plot differs from the comics in many ways, notably the complete absence of the Justice League, the fact that John Kent appears to be dead, and that Lois in the movie doesn't yet know that Clark is Superman. But still it looks good, and with Timm behind it, ought to be exciting. St Pauls Church, in Grangetown, Cardiff, was used as a location for an episode of the first series of Doctor Who starring the ninth Doctor played by Christopher Eccleston. And parish priest, Father Ben Andrews, 32, says he loves the cult TV show so much he thought a themed evening would go down well with the youngsters. He said: I love the series and it has such a great following that we couldnt resist doing something for young people on a Dr Who theme. We will be looking at the idea of Jesus as a Lord of time and showing who Jesus was and the different images of him throughout time. We will try and get some Dr Who props in to try and make it as lively as possible. The evening will use themes from the series to explore the Christian faith with hopes that young people can worship in a way thats right for them. Fr Dean Atkins, Diocese of Llandaff Youth Officer, thinks the night will prove a big hit with youngsters. He said: I think its a really forward-thinking thing to do. Using popular culture is a very good way to communicate with youngsters and I think it will be a very successful night. Fr Andrews says he hopes the church can capitalise on the popularity of the BBC Wales production, especially as the church starred in an episode of the show and was even pictured in a Dr Who calendar. He said: Lots of people think that young people are the future of the church. This kind of event will show they are part of the church of the present and have an important part to play in its future. We are building on the past but always looking forward. Everyone is welcome and were hoping for a big turnout. Fr Andrews, however, refuses to be drawn on whether hes managed to entice any aliens or monsters. Youll just have to wait and see! he said. The Dr Who themed evening of worship takes place at 6.30pm, on Sunday, September 23, at St Pauls Church, Grangetown, Cardiff.

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: New Highlander Movie Debuting on SciFi Channel This Saturday
you beat me to it!! :) It is really, really bad. The only Highlander movie that was good was the first one with Conner McLeod. The others all sucked and this is no exception. One thing I loved about the series was the fight scenes, which were usually pretty good. This one has a non-stop camera that makes me dizzy and doesn't show any good fight details. And I'm not just talking about when that idiot Guardian uses his super-speed. The movie's using all the horrible FX used in modern music videos. The plot's beyond stupid, the acting's stilted, and they killed Joe Dawson. (Don't worry about this spoiler folks, the movie's too crappy for you to care). I am trully appalled at how bad this is. The Source tells the story of Immortals as they quest to locate the Holy Grail of their world. The entire series of films will chronicle the origins of the Immortals. Director Brett Leonard commented This is a tremendous opportunity for a storyteller of this genre to take part in the mythology of 20 years. He continues that HIGHLANDER is an amazing ongoing story that I can bring my visual style to... Everything I have done has led me to this kind of mythical fantasy. Brett Leonard pioneered the creation of digital visual effects in filmmaking with 1992's Lawnmower Man, he also directed 1995's Virtuosity, and most recently completed Marvel's Man-Thing. He is heralded as a maverick in science fiction, fantasy and adventure by creating films with a strong visual presence. Peter Davis of Davis-Panzer Productions noted, We are truly celebrating this milestone in HIGHLANDER history by pairing Brett and Adrian in our newest Trilogy. We anticipate that this combination will recapture the filming glory of the original HIGHLANDER. Davis-Panzer Productions is busy further immortalizing the Clan MacLeod during the series' twentieth year with an anime feature film in partnership with Imagi and Madhouse of Japan and a video game with SCI Games Ltd. of London. There is no limit when your story is timeless and Immortal! HIGHLANDER: The Source will be distributed in North America through Lions Gate Films and in 40 foreign territories through the top independent distributors.
