2009-06-01 Thread Mr. Worf
This is slightly off topic, but I think that corporations have too much
influence over the artistic decision making of most of the tv shows and
movies as of late. STV and DS9 could have been better shows if they weren't
being milked for every dollar.

Blacks in Space

If sci-fi is the future, why is it so white?

Danielle C. Belton | May 29, 2009

Star Trek's Lt. Uhura was a science-fiction pioneer in the 1970s -- a black
woman answering the phone, I mean computer, in space. Uhura, played by actress
Nichelle Nichols, was the communications officer, a role that would go on to be
a popular one for futuristic minorities. While she was groundbreaking in that
she was a black woman who survived quite well in space, her story lines were
few, her adventures were stunted, and her romances were nonexistent. The
philandering Capt. Kirk had to be forced to kiss the comely Uhura -- apparently
in the future, interracial lip-lock is just as controversial as it was in the
1970s.
Nichols paved the way for Kandyse McClure's character Petty Officer Dualla, a
black woman who also starts out answering the phone, on the critically
acclaimed Battlestar Galactica series remake that wrapped this year. Dualla
fares better than Uhura in that she gets her own story line, experiences a real
romance, and has some adventures. But she commits suicide in the final season
of the series.

And these are the two primary options for blacks in space: Either you're
marginalized or killed off. (Or, in the worst-case scenario, you're
marginalized and still die.)

So when word got out that director J.J. Abrams was set to re-envision the
original Star Trek, with a big-budget film released last month, I was looking
out for Lt. Uhura. And she is certainly there, played by actress Zoë Saldana.
She's right where we left her in the 1970s, still answering the phone.

Science-fiction story lines might take place in the future, but they are
written in the now. They reflect the mind-set of the creators and the times
they live in. If most science-fiction films are to be believed, in the future
English is the main language. Not only do human beings still exist, they are
almost all white and they have mastered quantum physics. I'm sure none of this
has anything to do with the genre being dominated by the American film industry
and predominantly white, male writers. They've merely looked into their crystal
ball and seen the future. And the future is white!

Actor Joe Morton, who appeared in both writer/director John Sayles' 1984 cult
classic The Brother From Another Planet and 1991 blockbuster Terminator 2:
Judgment Day, recalls an old Richard Pryor joke. "Hollywood didn't think we'd
be around in the future," Morton says, "so why put us in the sci-fi movies?"

He continues, "If you are a 50- to 60-year-old white producer in Hollywood, for
the `heroic image' you're not going to think of a black man or woman.
Consequently, black roles in sci-fi are tokens. He was the communications
expert. The communications expert would also then be the first one to be
killed. First one to die." When George Lucas offered Samuel L. Jackson a role
in the final Star Wars prequel as the Jedi Mace Windu, Jackson agreed on the
condition his character not die "like some punk."

This is understandable coming from an actor who dies in many films, including a
few sci-fi flicks (Jurassic Park and Deep Blue Sea), often a few minutes after
his opening scene. And Jackson is not alone. Actress Bianca Lawson only lasted
for three episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer before her character, a Jamaican
vampire-slayer named Kendra, is killed off. Charles S. Dutton is heavily
featured in the third film of the Alien franchise, but his character dies a
horrid, painful death. In the bug-killing, utopian/ fascism parody Starship
Troopers, all the minority characters are purposeless and peripheral. The lone
black female washes out of boot camp after accidentally killing a fellow
recruit.

The controversial death of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje's character Mr. Eko on
ABC's Lost at the hands (does it have hands?) of the "smoke monster" led many
minority fans to believe there was a conspiracy to cleanse the show of all its
black and Latino characters. Before Eko was gobbled up by the dark, bilious
puff, minority actors Harold Perrineau and Michelle Rodriguez had also been
written off the show.

This isn't to say that minorities are always relegated to minor guest
characters who are doomed to die a purposeless death. In Terminator 2, Morton's
character dies trying to save the world. Morpheus, the rebel leader played by
Laurence Fishburne in The Matrix, guides the hero to his true path, and Capt.
Benjamin Sisko of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was the first African American
actor to lead a starship on the long-running franchise. While his character was
thin the first few seasons, eventually the writers gave Sisko well-rounded
stories and a passionate personality that separated him from the more stoic but
popular Capt. Jean Luc-Picard from the previous series. Sisko was an
improvement over the castrated black characters of Star Trek: The Next
Generation, which included Giordi LaForge, a

Reece,

actually we call all flag officers "sir". regardless of sex, unless they
specify it. being a Marine i have had 2 report 2 female commanders,
captains, and admirals and called them sir. only a handful will correct u
on it. and then only if u r directly in their command.

And probably not female, either!

I just watched a short special on Black Marines in WWII, and especially
Okinawa. There were NO
photos of them, and they were left out of the latest movies, too.
Ironically, a white woman who
believes in honoring ALL war veterans dug out tons of pictures from the
National Archives in DC.

So, if there HAS been any progress, they will portray this amazing admiral
just as she is, warts and
all. Because being human and overcoming a lot of what that means is what
makes sheroes and heroes.

And maybe one day, as in BSG, ALL flag officers will be called 'sir'. I
thought that was the coolest!

Trace,

that is the exact reason that i have yet to watch and never will watch world
trade center. the nick cage movie about the firefighters. there was a
Marine (and u know how i feel about my beloved United States Marine Corps -
Ohh Rah!) who was pivotal in helping the fire fighters and getting the
people organized in the rescue effort. he was a Black Marine and in the
movie they used a white guy. they producers later said right b4 it was
released - when they started getting flak about it, that they did not know
his skin color and that they only assumed that he was white. that pissed me
off even more. 2 me they were saying that they just assume that all heroic
figures are White! damn.

Oh I think it would be LOVELY as a radio drama, which I think means that it was
just well done in all aspects. On another, I have to say that the incessant
chant "Sidnery Briar is alive." was just so creepy and beautiful and insanely
relevant to what was happening in the film on both a conscious and subconsciuos
level. Yep, glad you got to see it when and how you did.

Strategies for movie bathroom breaks

by Mark Milian - Jun. 1, 2009 12:00 AM

Los Angeles Times

How many times have you been sitting in a movie theater and felt that familiar
pressure in your bladder, but didn't want to leave because you had a feeling
that the awesome battle scene you'd heard so much about was coming up soon?

Probably not that often, right? It's a problem that was almost too ridiculous
to be solved. But thanks to the wonders of the Internet, somebody did.

RunPee (www.runpee.com) shows a list of the boring parts in many of the popular
movies in theaters and tells you how far into the flick they appear. It even
gives you a synopsis of the part you'd be missing.

So at the 50-minute mark in "Star Trek," when Capt. Pike leaves the bridge, you
might want to leave for the john. If that large Coke hasn't hit you yet, you
could wait another 10 minutes and pop out when Spock has his tender moment.

The site also can be a sort of movie critic for especially bad flicks. For
example, RunPee recommends you take a permanent bathroom break 30 minutes into
"Hannah Montana: The Movie."

"Go home right after the previews," the description reads. "You won't miss
anything."

Because the site is based on the Flash programming language, it won't work on
many cell phones, which hinders its on-the-go utility. You could either print
it out before you leave for the movies or wait for the iPhone app, which should
be out by the end of next month.

Think you can hold it till then?

A post-apocalyptic tale based on a novella by Harlan Ellison. A boy
communicates telepathically with his dog as they scavenge for food and sex.
Come on! If that doesn't scream sequel, I don't know what does! "A Boy and his
Dog" (AKA "Psycho Boy and his Killer Dog") begs to be remade! Especially if
they can convene a cast as stellar as the first one: Don ("Miami Vice")
Johnson as "the boy," Tim McIntire as the voice of "Blood, the dog," and Jason
Robards as "the Beaver," uh, I mean as "Lou Craddock." And it positively MUST
get greenlit if they find a director as good as the incomparable L.Q. Jones.

Vic: We coulda used her three more times!
Blood: Ah, war is hell.

Blood: A cautous young fellow named Lodge / Had seatbelts installed in his

leaving the garage. That's clever, isn't it?

You know what? I'd prefer a return of the great cartoon "The Real Ghostbusters"
over a movie franchise. The first movie was good, but I just don't know that I
feel the magic and comedy of it can be recaptured, whether by the original cast
or a new class. But the cartoon? Ah, there was a quality show! The first two or
three seasons were incredible, with great stories, atmospheric music, and an
enjoyable Slimer. This was before the animation style changed, Slimer went from
uttering unintelligble sounds to talking like a child, and the title was
changed to "Slimer and the Real ghostbusters". Those later kid-friendly seasons
were crap...

Time travel with Robocop or Ghostbusters?

I too would like to see remakes of both. I think that the original Robocop was
very dark and sarcastic. The following sequels did not grasp it. There were
also the tv show. Anyone remember that?

Ghostbusters would be cool to see with the new CGI stuff. I can imagine a 200ft
monster full of souls, newspapers, bicycles and anything else in the region.
Then someone saying, "well I can say one good thing about this, at least the
city is a little cleaner" :) Hmmm maybe I should write the script. :)

Also another interesting film that would be good is the Blob. (adding to my
grossout thoughts for the moment.)

This was taken from one of the classes I'm in. I don't have the source of the
article.

Movies set for remake

"Robocop"

If the Terminator can get tuned up for a revival, why not that other 1980s
mechanical hero? After several fits and starts, MGM announced in March that a
reboot of “Robocop” would be in theaters in 2010. Darren Aronofsky (“The
Wrestler,” “Requiem for a Dream”) is directing the remake of Paul Verhoeven’s
bloody movie about a Detroit cop who is gunned down but then put back on patrol
as a cyborg with troubled soul

"The Terminator"

It’s not a remake, but filmmaker McG’s plan to revive the killer robot
franchise with a new sequel next summer starring Christian Bale as John Connor
has been circled by fans after a strong showing this past summer at Comic-Con
International. “Terminator Salvation” is set in the future and shows the grim
war between humans and Skynet with its murderous metallic armies. The plan is
for a full trilogy …

"When Worlds Collide"

Steven Spielberg is one of the producers and Stephen Sommers (“The Mummy,” “Van
Helsing”), infamous for his “give me more” attitude toward CGI effects, is
directing. Like the original 1951 film produced by George Pal, this “Worlds,”
due in theaters next year, is about the mad scramble to build a spaceship to
save humanity before Earth is destroyed by a rogue planet entering its orbit.
The problem comes when there aren’t enough seats for everybody on Earth.

Gail says: The conflict is, of course, a remake of the old ethical dilemma used
in every beginning ethics class since time began: If the lifeboat only has room
for 12 people and there are 13 to be saved who gets left behind?

"Ghostbusters"

There’s talk of making a third installment in the hugely successful sci-fi
comedy franchise and bringing back the original crew -- Bill Murray, Dan
Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson -- as well as some new-blood,
second-generation busters. Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, writers for “The
Office,” are at work on the script for Columbia Pictures and Murray, in the
past the most reluctant to return to the franchise, has said publicly that he’s
open to the idea. There was talk of Seth Rogen being a likely cast addition but
don’t bother calling him: “It sounds,” he said in October, “like the worst idea
ever."

"Logan's Run"

This is a remake that can’t seem to find sanctuary even after a decade of
attempts. A few years ago, Bryan Singer (“The X-Men,” “The Usual Suspects”) was
all set to re-imagine the 1976 movie about a society where everyone submits to
state-ordered execution parlors on their 30th birthday or gets hunted down by
agents called Sandmen (the age was 21 in the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and
George Clayton Johnson that served as sour

Ship commanded by Black woman admiral rescued Maersk Alabama captain

By James Wright
AFRO Staff Writer

Admiral Michelle Howard (Courtesy Photo)

(April 26, 2009) - While the facts surrounding the kidnapping and rescue of the
Maersk Alabama Captain Richard Phillips have been widely reported, less
well-known is that ship which saved him was commanded by a black woman, Rear
Admiral Michelle Howard.

Howard received the assignment of leading 20 the U.S. Navy's counter-piracy
task force just three days before the Maersk Alabama was attacked by Somalia
pirates.

“It 's probably one of the most exciting missions the Navy has been on in for a
long while,” Howard told the Navy Times.

Howard is the first of her 1982 U.S. Naval Academy class to reach the rank of
admiral. In 1999, Howard became the f irst African-American woman to command a
U.S. Navy ship, the USS Rushmore.

She holds a masters degree in Military Science Arts and Sci ences from the
Army’s Command and General Staff College .

Howard said the mission of her unit, Combined Task Force 151, will remain
deterring and disrupting piracy off the Horn of Africa.

“Right now, the policy is, fight piracy, and I am all about that policy,8 0 she
told the Navy Times. “We are quite capable of staying out here and doing this
mission.”

Howard’s task force operates with U.S. warships deployed to the eastern Africa
area as well as those sent from allied nations. Before her assignment to the
strike group, Howard was the senior military assistant to the Secretary of the
Navy.

In fact with the possible exception of Jericho (which I still think is one
of CBS' unregonized gems) it would make me very happy if it actually did
just go away. As it is now it's not only unwatchable it's now insulting.
But that's just me.

This touches on a pet peeve of mine about hollywood. When they are writing,
or casting films they often list white characters. This may or may not be
intentional, but the end result if you multiply that by how many different
commercials, movies etc are cast you see an imbalance in the number of white vs
any other race. This is really evident when casting lead roles.

And
probably not female, either!

I just
watched a short special on Black Marines in WWII, and especially Okinawa.
There were NO

So, if
there HAS been any progress, they will portray this amazing admiral just as she

And
maybe one day, as in BSG, ALL flag officers will be called 'sir'. I
thought that was the coolest!

Okay, a story I heard once, regarding the reason for UPN's existence. Paramount
was reportedly ticked off at the short shrift that TNG and DSNine had been
given in syndication. (Here in Atlanta, the station that carried it, Channel
46, aired the wrong show *twice* ebfore finally ariring the final ep.) To that
end, Paramount decided that they wanted all of Trek under one umbrella. To that
end, they whipped up UPN, and threw out the V-Word Series as its first Trek
offering. But, and I can't find any corroboration for this part, Paramouunt
could'nt get TOS back from Skiffy. Don't ask me how, folks. I just pass this
on...

UPN was the only network that aired STNG when it was on.

I think the CW and whatever that other new network is called lack direction and
any true programming plans. I remember when they started the network. It was 4
or 5 months before their website was finished. Not well planned.

We just watched this movie. Have to admit I loved it. Has anyone else seen it?
The entire movie takes place in a remote Ontario radio station, with a
charismatic Stephen McHattie playing the grizzled radio host trying to report
on a bizarre phenomenon outside without any anchor in reality or context in
which to put the strange things he's hearing through the phone in lines, from
other radio stations, and even his reporters in the field. There were many
awesome quotes but here is my favorite:

"That was our own Ken Looney interviewing a screaming baby coming from Mary
Gulf's eldest son's dying gasp. That was a little baby. A tiny little baby."

Oh yeah... and there's Honey the missing cat.

Yes, keith, it was all out at about the same time. And the less you remember
about that, the better off your psyche will be.

I don't remember much of Extreme Ghostbusters. Think I watched a couple of eps,
but didn't like it much. Was it out around the same time as that Starship
Troopers CGI toon, the horrible Speed Racer sequel series, and the incredibly
awful Highlander animated series?

The Extreme Ghostbusters show (which was a sequel to the "Real Ghostbusters")
was also a good sereis which managed to capture the feel of both-while using
younger characters mixed in with the older ones (first only Egon and Jennie
with the others joining in later on). And while the show lasted 1-or-2 seasons
(I think it lasted 11/2) it never became watered down. Infact it was pretty
'edgy' at times for a saturday/evening toon show.

I'm not even sure if some would be able to adapt, Keith. I really can't
see a samurai or a ninja being able to use a broadsword, for example. The
dynamics of handling and using a katana are completely different.

Right, and that was my point. I'd love to see a fantasy matchup with guys from
different eras using the same weaponry. Of course, then you're really stepping
out, as you'd have to basically extrapolate like crazy to predict how a guy
from a land of brass weapons would learn to use a bow and arrow, or a steel
broadsword or something.

One of Zulu's strengths was his battle tactics. I read somewhere that his skill
on the battlefield was as good as any contemporary general of his time. If the
Zulus were able to obtain more weapons (They had the guns but no one would sell
them bullets.) they more than likely would have completely repelled the British
Empire from that region of the world.

Yeah, I caught it, it was good. I really love this show. It gets a bit tough
when they take people from different eras and match them: steel against brass,
armour against bare skin, guns against swords. that was the case with Shaka:
his "spit poison" and wooden shield couldn't compete with an eight (six?) foot
long sword. What I'd really like to see is a normalized matchup in those cases.
For example, that Scottish sword was actually used just as often to simply
sweep the legs of horses to cut them off as it was to attack me. And, deadly or
not, a sword that long simply can't be swung quickly, maneuvered with finesse,
or wielded for too long. So, a Zulu warrior with Shaka's speed and agility,
upgraded with weapons and armour contemporary to William Wallace, would no
doubt win the day.

I am hoping that they do matches later on that pit all the winners against each
other...

So, anyone catch this week's DW?

Instead of "Generic guy vs Generic guy", they set up William Wallace &

Shaka Zulu.

Once again we see, if you have a piece of equipment that will blind
your opponent, Leave that at home!
