What kills me is people take what these guys say as fact no matter the
delivery. I was in Indiana yesterday on business and the fact that Beck was
there doing a "Rally for America" was touted. I guess I let my facial
expression slip because I was asked if liked Mr. Beck.

I said no and left it at that.

Both of those clowns are scary because of the sh*t they trumpet all over the
nation's carpets, but Dobbs, IMO, is a step worse, because he's *sane*. He
monotones his bile, whereas Beck screams his. People are more apt to laugh at
Beck, while they'll nod and say, "You know, he might have a point..." at Dobbs'
words.

The Lou Dobbs problem on CNN pales in comparison to Glenn Beck on Fox News. In
the past two weeks, Beck has claimed that (1) Obama is trying to institute some
back door reparations program with the programs he's trying to implement and
(2) flat out called Obama a racist because of response to the Gates issue.

Hi,
CNN host Lou Dobbs is promoting debunked "birther" conspiracy

Transparent aluminium is 'new state of matter'

July 27th, 2009

(PhysOrg.com) -- Oxford scientists have created a transparent form of
aluminium by bombarding the metal with the world’s most powerful soft
X-ray laser. 'Transparent aluminium' previously only existed in science
fiction, featuring in the movie Star Trek IV, but the real material is an
exotic new state of matter with implications for planetary science and
nuclear fusion.

In this week’s Nature Physics an international team, led by Oxford
University scientists, report that a short pulse from the FLASH laser
‘knocked out’ a core electron from every aluminium atom in a sample
without disrupting the metal’s crystalline structure. This turned the
aluminium nearly invisible to extreme ultraviolet radiation.

''What we have created is a completely new state of matter nobody has seen
before,’ said Professor Justin Wark of Oxford University’s Department of
Physics, one of the authors of the paper. ‘Transparent aluminium is just
the start. The physical properties of the matter we are creating are
relevant to the conditions inside large planets, and we also hope that by
studying it we can gain a greater understanding of what is going on during
the creation of 'miniature stars' created by high-power laser implosions,
which may one day allow the power of nuclear fusion to be harnessed here
on Earth.’

The discovery was made possible with the development of a new source of
radiation that is ten billion times brighter than any synchrotron in the
world (such as the UK’s Diamond Light Source). The FLASH laser, based in
Hamburg, Germany, produces extremely brief pulses of soft X-ray light,
each of which is more powerful than the output of a power plant that
provides electricity to a whole city.

The Oxford team, along with their international colleagues, focused all
this power down into a spot with a diameter less than a twentieth of the
width of a human hair. At such high intensities the aluminium turned
transparent.

Whilst the invisible effect lasted for only an extremely brief period - an
estimated 40 femtoseconds - it demonstrates that such an exotic state of
matter can be created using very high power X-ray sources.

Professor Wark added: ‘What is particularly remarkable about our
experiment is that we have turned ordinary aluminium into this exotic new
material in a single step by using this very powerful laser. For a brief
period the sample looks and behaves in every way like a new form of
matter. In certain respects, the way it reacts is as though we had changed
every aluminium atom into silicon: it’s almost as surprising as finding
that you can turn lead into gold with light!’

The researchers believe that the new approach is an ideal way to create
and study such exotic states of matter and will lead to further work
relevant to areas as diverse as planetary science, astrophysics and
nuclear fusion power.

A report of the research, 'Turning solid aluminium transparent by intense
soft X-ray photoionization', is published in Nature Physics. The research
was carried out by an international team led by Oxford University
scientists Professor Justin Wark, Dr Bob Nagler, Dr Gianluca Gregori,
William Murphy, Sam Vinko and Thomas Whitcher.

Henry Louis Gates Jr. , the black professor at the center of the racial story
involving his arrest outside his Harvard University-owned house, has spoken
proudly of his Irish roots .

Strangely enough, he and the Cambridge, Mass., police officer who arrested him,
Sgt. James Crowley , both trace their ancestry back to the legendary Niall of
the Nine Hostages .

In a PBS series on African-American ancestry that he hosted in 2008, Gates
discovered his Irish roots when he found he was descended from an Irish
immigrant and a slave girl.

He went to Trinity College in Dublin to have his DNA analyzed. There he found
that he shared 10 of the 11 DNA matches with offspring of Niall of the Nine
Hostages, the fourth century warlord who created one of the dominant strains of
Irish genealogy because he had so many offspring.

onically, James Crowley , whose name in Gaelic means "hardy warrior," is also
descended from the same line as Gates, having very close links to Niall of the
Nine Hostages.

So the two men who took part in what is now an infamous confrontation outside
the Gates home near Harvard this month are actually related through common
Irish lineage -- one of the more extraordinary aspects of the incident that has
sparked worldwide headlines.

Gates is one of many famous African-Americans with Irish heritage, including
President Barack Obama and award-winning author Alice Walker.

On the PBS series, Gates visits Trinity College to find his roots, and says to
the genealogist, "Do I look like an Irishman to you? I'm here to find my roots.
I've been looking all over Africa and I couldn't find anybody, so I ended up
here.

"I'm descended from a white man, he says. "A white man who slept with a black
slave. And we know from the analysis of my DNA that ... goes back to Ireland.
So maybe you can help me."

Hard-boiled crime stories punch up the world of graphic novels

By Geoff Boucher | Tribune Newspapers
 July 29, 2009

LOS ANGELES -- Even when the movies ended up bad -- and they usually did --
crime novelist Donald E. Westlake never had a problem taking Hollywood money
for his ideas. But with his signature creation, the ruthless career criminal
known simply as Parker, Westlake insisted that the names be changed to protect
the guilty.

Westlake, who died at age 75 last New Year's Eve, saw seven movies made from
his Parker novels (which were published under his pseudonym Richard Stark), but
in each film the main character's name was changed; even when Lee Marvin,
Robert Duvall or Mel Gibson was in the role, Westlake wouldn't entrust his
favorite brand name to anyone else. That changed, though, in the final months
of Westlake's life in an unexpected way that had nothing to do with Hollywood.

A Nova Scotia-based illustrator named Darwyn Cooke and a San Diego book editor
named Scott Dunbier convinced the aging author that the ideal visual medium for
his terse, bare-knuckled tales of mayhem was the graphic novel. And, after
Westlake saw Cooke's spare and stylized artwork (between the vintage cool of
"Mad Men" and the storytelling flair of Milton Caniff's "Steve Canyon" comic
strips), he enthusiastically agreed. The result hit shelves this month: the
graphic novel "The Hunter" (IDW Publishing, $24.99), a meticulously faithful
adaptation of the 1962 novel of the same name.

The Cooke adaptation is already being hailed as a masterpiece by key
tastemakers in the comics world, and last week it met the public as Cooke and
Dunbier took it to Comic-Con International in San Diego, the massive
pop-culture expo that is a sort of Cannes for capes or a Sundance for sci-fi.
Cooke was on two panels, including a program titled "A Darker Shade of Ink:
Crime and Noir in Comics."

Scientists can't yet explain why green M&Ms seem to hold seductive powers or
why the brown-hued chocolates appear to bring bad luck.

But new research shows that an artificial dye that is chemically similar to the
one used in blue M&Ms may hold promise in treating spinal cord injuries,
according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The compound, called Brilliant Blue G--was injected into the veins of rats
within 15 minutes of receiving a paralyzing injury. The rats given the BBG
solution temporarily turned blue and regained their ability to walk, albeit
with a limp.

Millions of Irish Americans, especially those in New York, may be directly

A team of geneticists at Trinity College led by professor Dan Bradley have

Sgt. James Crowley , both trace their ancestry back to the legendary Niall of

When the genealogist tells him he does indeed have Irish links, Gates says, "I
find this oddly moving. It is astonishing," he says, "that I have a kinship
with someone (Niall of the Nine Hostages) dating back to the fourth century
A.D."

Millions of Irish Americans, especially those in New York, may be directly
descended, like Gates, from Niall of the Nine Hostages, the most prolific
warrior in Irish history.

A team of geneticists at Trinity College led by professor Dan Bradley have
discovered that as many as 3 million men worldwide may be descendents of the
Irish warlord, who was the Irish "High King" at Tara, the ancient center of
Ireland from A.D. 379 to A.D. 405.

The story of Niall of the Nine Hostages is already the stuff of legend, which
has been passed on to countless Irish schoolchildren over the years.

The supposedly fearless leader battled the English, the Scots, the French and
even the Romans, and struck fear into the heart of his enemies. His dynasty
lasted for centuries, continuing up until the Elizabethan conquest of Ireland
at the end of the 16th century.

Looks pretty faithful to the book.

IMO, that's not saying much. When I first picked it up, I pretty much knew that
it wasn't going to be very science-fictiony. I didn't expect the saccharine
levels to be near such lethal levels. Take it as a given that I won't be taking
this one in.

Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy
is to narrate the first astronomic
orchestral concert on the lawn outside Hollywood landmark the Griffith
Observatory.

Film and TV's Mr. Spock will be backed by the 67-piece Symphony in the Glen
for the full moon performance of Arthur
 B. Rubinstein's Observations on 4
October.

It's the first time in the observatory's 74-year history that a full
symphony orchestra has performed there.

The observatory has provided the backdrop for a host of classic movies,
including Rebel without a Cause, The Terminator, Bowfinger and Transformers.

[scifinoir2] Harvard Prof Gates Is Half-Irish, Related to Cop Who Arrested Him

[scifinoir2] WHILE DVD SALES SLUMP, NETFLIX RENTALS SOAR

2009-07-29 Thread Tracey de Morsella
It could be the recession. Or it could be that DVD buyers are looking at
their collection and coming to the realization that few of those discs are
coming off their shelves after being viewed once. Whatever the reason, DVD
sales are down 13.5 percent for the first half of the year, while rentals
are surging. Netflix said Thursday that its overall revenue had risen 21
percent to $408.5 million during the second quarter, while its net grew 22
percent to $34.4 million versus the comparable quarter a year ago. (Kiosk
operator Redbox has reported similar growth.) In a conference call with
reporters and investors on Thursday, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings noted that
half of his company's expenses could be attributed to postage costs. As
reported by the Los Angeles Times, Hastings said he is
therefore trying to work out arrangements with the studios whereby newer
discs could be distributed to subscribers via the Internet. "The long-term
vision is that studios get two-thirds of our spending and we don't have to
ship as many DVDs," he said.
