Re: [scifinoir2] Clock winds down for '24'

2010-03-14 Thread Martin Baxter
Whoops... pardon me, Fate. [?][?]

The idea of a countdown was sorta done in "Nick of
Time".
If memory serves, the counter wasn't on-screen continuously, just at
critical points in the movie. Constant countdown, as you said, would make
for more suspense.

[scifinoir2] Today is "Pi Day"

2010-03-14 Thread Keith Johnson
That's a new one on me. Check out the Google symbol for today:

http://www.inquisitr.com/66491/pi-day-2010/

The internet
has a habit of inspiring new, geeky holidays, like Square Root Day , National
High Five Day , Talk Like a Pirate Day and a favorite among mathletes
everywhere, Pi Day .

Pi Day falls on March 14th because of the first digits of Pi- 3.14. Another
geeky boon is that the holiday also happens to be the birthday of one of
science’s biggest rockstars, Albert Einstein. Many cities and institutions of
geekery, like the Maryland Science Center , hold celebrations to party down on
the mathiest day of the year. The OC Register points out that not only is the
Discovery Science Center hosting a shindig, but some local restaurants are
dishing out free pie in honor of Pi Day. San Francisco’s Exploratorium has been
Pi partying for over two decades.

The truly geeky, of course, are waiting for Pi Day 2015 for some nerdy reason
explained in detail on their Facebook page . If you live in a town full of
stupids, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little bit of fun with Pi Day. The
Joy of Pi has a wealth of Pi-related links for you to browse. You can also
visit the official Pi Day website for ideas.

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: comixland [aquaman]

2010-03-14 Thread Keith Johnson
He was better and more interesting during the times he acted more like Namor:
when he lost the hand, grew his hair and beard out, and adopted a much more "me
against the Surface Dwellers" attitude. He dropped the orange-and-green costume
for much of that period. That's the Aquaman that was introduced in the Justice
League cartoons, and he's much cooler. I remember in the 'toon he cut off his
own hand to save himself and a child from a trap set by his evil brother. Once
the JL realized what he'd done, Green Lantern says, "I told you he was crazy".

>From Wikipedia:

Aquaman has also appeared in animated and live-action television programs. In
pop culture, Aquaman has frequently been the subject of mockery for his
distinctive powers, which are often comically portrayed as useless in
comparison to those of other superheroes.

The first recurring supporting characters in the feature were various sea
creatures, including Ark, a pet seal who appeared in several of Aquaman's 1940s
adventures, and Topo, Aquaman's pet octopus, who first appeared in Adventure
Comics #229 (Oct. 1956).

It is interesting to me that both Aquaman (and Marvel's Sub-Mariner (Marie
Severin) were at one time penciled by women.

People lost a LOT of money back then, but it was mostly on paper. Today, I
heard the worst horror story of them all. One woman that was a designer for

end of the .com crash she had lost $199 million.

That's scary. That made me not feel so bad about loosing $40k.

[scifinoir2] .'Mission: Impossible' star Peter Graves dies in LA

2010-03-14 Thread Keith Johnson

Sad news. I was always a fan of Graves.  Reading about his curriculum vitae,
i'm reminded about how times have changed. His early movies were fighting a
giant carrot-alien-thingie, and a giant grasshopper? That wouldn't play
nowadays--outside of a cheesy SyFy Originals movie, that is. Thinking of the
*real* "Mission: Impossible" makes me miss all the more shows and movies
centered around true suspense and intelligent plotting, rather than explosions,
FX, and whizz-bang of modern fare, such as the inferiour movies Tom Cruise made
out of the IM franchise. And I'm also reminded that Graves was extremely
upset--rightfully so--that Cruise decided to make Jim Phelps a murderous
traitor in the first film. Disgusting.  Indeed, in a interview several years
ago, Graves said this:

When the first film was made with Tom [Cruise], I certainly objected to Jon
Voight playing a character named Phelps who turns out to be the rat and the spy
and the killer who destroys his whole team of people — and he himself is killed
in that film. I didn’t like that much. And certainly the approach to Mission:
Impossible, which had been a sort of intellectual game, rather than shoot ‘em
up, car crash, plane crash, bang bang stuff.

Graves also had reservations about playing both a comedic role in "Airplane",
and, playing a man who gets really freaky toward a young boy--something else
that certainly wouldn't play nowadays.  Still, the move was a boon to his
career. Good actor who did some good stuff--including films like "Stalag 17"
that most people nowadays know nothing about. He will be missed, and for my
mind, he will always be the *real* Jim Phelps who wasn't a traitor!

'Mission: Impossible' star Peter Graves dies in LA

LOS ANGELES – Peter Graves , the tall, stalwart actor likely best known for his
portrayal of Jim Phelps , leader of a gang of special agents who battled evil
conspirators in the long-running television series " Mission: Impossible ,"
died Sunday.

Graves died of an apparent heart attack outside his Los Angeles home, publicist
Sandy Brokaw said. He would have been 84 this week.

Graves had just returned from brunch with his wife and kids and collapsed
before he made it into the house, Brokaw said. One of his daughters
administered CPR but was unable to revive him. Graves' family doctor visited
the house and believed he had a heart attack, Brokaw said.

Although Graves never achieved the stardom his older brother, James Arness,
enjoyed as Marshal Matt Dillon on TV's "Gunsmoke," he had a number of memorable
roles in both films and television.

Normally cast as a hero, he turned in an unforgettable performance early in his
career as the treacherous Nazi spy in Billy Wilder 's 1953 prisoner-of-war
drama " Stalag 17 ."

He also masterfully lampooned his straight-arrow image when he portrayed
bumbling airline pilot Clarence Oveur in the 1980 disaster movie spoof
"Airplane!"

Graves appeared in dozens of films and a handful of television shows in a
career of nearly 60 years.

The authority and trust he projected made him a favorite for commercials late
in his life, and he was often encouraged to go into politics.

"He had this statesmanlike quality," Brokaw said. "People were always
encouraging him to run for office. But he said, 'I like acting. I like being
around actors.'"

Graves' career began with cheaply made exploitation films like " It Conquered
the World ," in which he battled a carrot-shaped monster from Venus, and
"Beginning of the World," in which he fought a giant grasshopper.

He later took on equally formidable human villains each week on " Mission:
Impossible ."

Every show began with Graves, as agent Phelps, listening to a tape of
instructions outlining his team's latest mission and explaining that if he or
any of his agents were killed or captured "the secretary will disavow any
knowledge of your actions."

The tape always self-destructed within seconds of being played.

The show ran on CBS from 1967 to 1973 and was revived on ABC from 1988 to 1990
with Graves back as the only original cast member.

The actor credited clever writing for the show's success.

"It made you think a little bit and kept you on the edge of your seat because
you never knew what was going to happen next," he once said.

He also played roles in such films as John Ford's " The Long Gray Line " and
Charles Laughton 's " The Night of the Hunter ," as well as "The Court-Martial
of Billy Mitchell," "Texas Across the River" and " The Ballad of Josie ."

Graves' first television series was a children's Saturday morning show, "Fury,"
about an orphan and his untamed black stallion . Filmed in Australia , it
lasted six years on NBC . A west
