Right now, they play by their own rules. Imagine if the wireless carriers controlled your wired broadband connection or your television set. You’d have to buy your television from your cable company, with a two-year contract, and when that ended, you’d have to ask them to unlock it so you could take it to another provider. So, for all time, there is in my yearbook a picture of a black man with a noose around his neck, body leaned forward as if hanging by the neck, eyes closed, tongue hanging out as if he'd died by lynching. The other end of the rope is held by a smiling white dude. Surrounding the body are the grinning faces of the Rodeo Club members, men and women alike. All are white except for two Mexicans and one Korean-American. I don't even have words for the bitter irony of Asians and Mexicans leapfrogging to the point where they can laugh at lynching a black man. That picture got past the teacher who ran the annual program, and I'm not sure if it was an oversight or lack of caring. I suspect the latter, as there was no outcry at school when the annual was published. No one I complained too seemed to care, black or white, aside from a small number of people. Nothing was done, the pictured stayed, and there it stays to this day. It sickened me, and every time I go home and look through that annual, it makes me sick all over again. I've got a Lexmark printer that occasionally reports what it prints back to Lexmark. Based on that, I've been expecting spam ever since. But, since most of my printing is science-related, I think I'm safe. (Unless arVix and MIT begin offering themselves for sale.) Still, one more reason to have no truck with anything HP-related. On Thu, Jun 17, 2010 at 12:04 PM, Keith Johnson keithbjohn...@comcast.net wrote: If the printer is a locally-attached one, not on a network, but only connected to a computer, then they can't detect and spam it. Also, on a company or well-designed home network, all networked devices should be behind a firewall, either a software one, or a combination, such as with that provided by routers. In that case too, if the firewall is set up properly, they shouldn't be able to access the printer. Home routers, for example, hand out non-routable IP addresses, with forms like 192.168.0.x, which can be protected behind the router so no one can access it. Since printers have a lot fewer ports (paths to invade their software) than typical PC's, I'd think it'd be a lot easier to lock them down. The moral of the story? As always, whether at home or at work, you *must* have a good router to shield your network from the Net, good anti-virus/anti-spam software to help doing the same, and take the time to manage your network so that you explicitly forbid unsanctioned incursions as much as possible. - Original Message - From: Kelwyn ravena...@yahoo.com To: scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, June 17, 2010 11:08:25 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: [scifinoir2] HP to spam your web-connected printer http://www.boingboing.net/2010/06/16/hp-to-spam-your-web-.html HP and Yahoo are teaming up to spam advertisements to your printer -- the next step being behavioral ads based on the traffic it can sniff from your local network: Through IP (Internet Protocol) sniffing, you have an idea about where those printers are so naturally it allows you to kind of already target your offers, Nigro said. [scifinoir2] CBS' Moonves Surprised at Upset over Cancellations
I didn't watch Ghost Whisperer much, though it was a good show for its type. I really liked Numb3rs and Old Christine. I guess I just don't get the idea of a show finally becoming too expensive, and even though it's doing well, being canceled. Now you go back to the pool of trying a bunch of new shows and hoping for the next hit. Isn't there something to be said for keeping the steadily performing ones even if they do cost a bit more? [Fancast TV News] CBS Boss Defends Cutting 7 Shows: ‘I’m Surprised That You’re Surprised’ by Matt Webb Mitovich CBS CEO Leslie Moonves says he was taken aback by the media’s reaction to the network’s cancellation of seven shows, ‘ Ghost Whisperer ‘ and ‘ Old Christine ‘ included. “I’m surprised to read that you were surprised,” Moonves told a select group of reporters on hand for an annual breakfast preceding CBS’ annual upfront presentation. Moonves justified the serial jiltings by lumping the cut shows into two categories. Addressing ‘Ghost Whisperer,’ ‘ Numb3rs ‘ and ‘ Miami Medical ,’ he noted, “You have all said, ‘Oh my god, what has happened to Friday night? Is it turning to Saturday?!’ And our answer is hell no .” Thus the decision to freshen up Friday by pairing ‘Medium’ (the night’s sole survivor) with a relocated ‘CSI: NY’ and the Tom Selleck-fronted cop drama ‘Blue Blood.’ Turning to ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine’ (starring Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus), ‘ Gary Unmarried ‘ and ‘ Accidentally On Purpose ,’ he noted that on a good day they were pulling a 1.8 rating in the coveted 18-49 demo, and that the numbers were “not heading in the right direction.” “That’s not a good place for the No 1 network to be at,” he added. “And we think we can do better.” Sunday night’s long-running ‘ Cold Case ,’ the seventh of the canceled shows, simply proved too costly to keep on the air, it has been reported. The multiple cuts, combined with several unexpected time-slot changes – ‘Big Bang Theory,’ ‘Survivor,’ ‘CSI: NY’ and ‘CSI: Miami’ all are on the move – “is about improving time periods,” said Moonves. “There are a couple of risks we have here, and a couple of big swings we’ve taken.” Related story: CBS announces cancellations If you’re a CBS show and you’re not a ‘CSI’ or ‘NCIS,’ or if Chuck Lorre has never glanced in your general direction, Tuesday morning was likely rough for you. On the eve of unveiling its schedule for the 2010-11 TV season, the most-watched network severed ties with a full seven shows, including Friday mainstays ‘ Ghost Whisperer ‘ and ‘ Numb3rs ,’ and the comedy ‘ The New Adventures of Old Christine .’ Also getting the hook, according to multiple sources, are ‘ Cold Case ‘ and ‘ Gary Unmarried ‘ and the freshman series ‘ Accidentally On Purpose ‘ and ‘ Miami Medical .’ Fans of Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus ‘ ‘Christine’ have one possible lifeline: EW.com and Deadline.com both report that there’s a “50/50 chance” of ABC picking up the decently-performing Warner Bros. TV comedy. And for what it’s worth, ‘Ghost Whisperer’ J.Love should be a lock to quickly land a new series – ideally a non-brooding comedy – based on her winning cameo, as herself, in the new NBC comedy ‘Love Bites.’ Among the “bubble” show renewals expected to be announced by CBS on Wednesday are ‘ Medium ‘ (which it picked up from NBC a year ago) and ‘ Rules of Engagement .’
Re: [scifinoir2] CBS' Moonves Surprised at Upset over Cancellations
I watched a couple of episodes of Ghost Whisperer but it reminded me of a tamer, less mature, less well written version of Medium. More like Charmed without the action and cool demons. I was surprised that it stayed on for so long. I suspect that they killed cold case because of its budget. Big cast, period costumes every episode (not to mention sets and props) had to be expensive. The latest crop of medical shows all seem to be copying the same old formula and I think the audiences are bored with them. Re: [scifinoir2] CBS' Moonves Surprised at Upset over Cancellations
Ghost Whisperer was a bit more sophisticated, for lack of a better term, than Charmed. The latter was all about pretty young people-even the demons looked like people from Casting Central. Ghost Whisperer also had a more serious feeling to it, in that it dealt with people having to accept their deaths, family members struggling with the loss of those loved ones. In Charmed, half the people who died came back as helpful ghosts who seemed to be chillin', White Lighters, or something like that. Charmed was definitely aimed at the young audience, while Ghost Whisperer filled the niche of shows like Murder She Wrote and Touched by An Angel, which appealed to older people and families. Medium is a much grimmer and grittier show than either. - Original Message - From: Mr. Worf hellomahog...@gmail.com To: scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, June 18, 2010 9:33:55 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: [scifinoir2] CBS' Moonves Surprised at Upset over Cancellations I watched a couple of episodes of Ghost Whisperer but it reminded me of a tamer, less mature, less well written version of Medium. TV comedy. And for what it’s worth, ‘Ghost Whisperer’ J.Love should be a lock to quickly land a new series – ideally a non-brooding comedy – based on her winning cameo, as herself, in the new NBC comedy ‘Love Bites.’ Among the “bubble” show renewals expected to be announced by CBS on
[scifinoir2] Fans Upset with Treatment of Criminal Minds Actresses
Some of the anger at CBS' recent programming changes stem from the reduction in the roles of the female members of Criminal Minds. I do think it odd that the show will now have a preponderance of men, given that it didn't start out that way. One of the actresses angrily says it's about money--love the bullsh** comment--but for both women? As far as the show itself, it was never my cup of tea. It's way too grisly for me: seems like all they do is abduct women and have them bound, gagged, and violated by psycho-murdering-sociopathic-cannibalistic perverts or something. And given that the show seemed to do all these grisly things to primarily women victims--causing some to call it exploitative--it's even more curious that they've reduced the female cast. It seems the male cast members are mostly upset and doing what they can to help the ladies out. Again, not a show a watch, but the changes are curious... * ‘Criminal’ Cuts Anger Fans, Leave Stars ‘Befuddled’ and ‘Mystified’ by Matt Webb Mitovich Jun 17th, 2010 ‘ Criminal Minds ‘ fans are nearly of a single mind when it comes to the release of longtime cast member A.J. Cook (who plays JJ) and reduced episode count for Paget Brewster (Prentiss), with many deeming the Season 6 cuts a “massive” or “huge” mistake. “ It is going to be the show’s downfall ,” says Khrista, echoing the sentiment of 96 percent of Fancast readers who commented on the original news story. “People watch these shows for the group dynamic, and we don’t like change.” Another fan, Eleanor, warned, “ CBS has gone too far this time, messing up a good show that has a great ensemble cast.” Fancast reader Joe called the decision – which was originally described as financially driven, then later spun as a creative call – “the most stupid and chauvinistic thing CBS could do.” especially in the wake of ‘CSI’ dropping Liz Vassey and CBS canceling the female-driven series ‘Ghost Whisperer’ and ‘Cold Case.’ “I have watched ['Criminal Minds'] from the beginning but will stop now.” The words “sexist” and “chauvinistic” were wielded by many to categorize the gender-themed cuts. As reader BeGood points out, if both JJ and Prentiss fall by the wayside, the only remaining woman is Garcia, “the computer geek who rarely goes to the crime scene.” Cook has been moved by the response from fans – some of who have started an online petition asking TPTB to rethink their decision . “Your kind words and support have made me feel wanted and loved!” the actress shared via Twitter . Brewster was less restrained with her reaction, tweeting , “‘Creative Reasons’ has been an Executive Bulls–t excuse for DECADES. It IS financial.” Of the ‘Minds’ men, Matthew Gray Gubler (who plays Reid) said on Twitter that he is “ absolutely befuddled ” by the news, while Thomas Gibson wrote , “To say we’re all mystified and disappointed is an understatement.” Joe Mantegna has been busy retweeting requests to sign the aforementioned petition, saying, “We love [A.J. and Paget] and the show wouldn’t be the same without them.” So anxious are ‘Criminal Minds’ fans to assign blame that a few of you have set your sights on no, not the show’s producers, but a certain party animal who favors bowling shirts (and boffo paydays). “Hmm, does this have anything to do with paying Charlie Sheen 1.78 MILLION DOLLARS AN EPISODE to pretty much play CHARLIE SHEEN on ‘Two and a Half Men’?” asks Kristen. “Way to go there, CBS!” [Related story announcing change to female cast members] I venture to say this news isn’t going to go over well with many ‘ Criminal Minds ‘ fans: As the CBS crime drama heads into its sixth season, a movement is underway to trim the female cast, for financial reasons. A.J. Cook , for one, isn’t having her option picked up for the coming season, says Deadline.com . Worst case scenario: We have seen the last of JJ Jareau, who has been part of the ensemble since the episode following the pilot. There is, however, a chance that Cook will return for a few episodes to wrap up her storyline. Paget Brewster , meanwhile, has been asked to return in a reduced capacity, though she may get to retain her “series regular” status. Brewster joined the procedural as Emily Prentiss midway through Season 2. The above moves – which are part of a larger, CBS-wide bid to cut costs on long-running shows with large ensembles – leave Kirsten Vangsness (who plays computer-savvy Garcia) as the series’ only full-time female cast member. The timing and gender-themed nature of these trims is unfortunate, coming as they do on the heels of CBS canceling its only female-driven series : ‘Old Christine,’ ‘Ghost Whisperer,’ ‘Cold Case’ and ‘Accidentally On Purpose.’ ‘Criminal Minds’ male cast includes Joe Mantegna, Thomas Gibson, Shemar Moore and Matthew Gray Gubler.
[scifinoir2] ‘Criminal Minds’ Spin-of f To Star Forest Whitaker
Well I guess we know where the money saved on the actresses for Criminal Minds is going. Wow. If you consider Law and Order (which sadly canceled its flagship series), CSI, NCIS, and now Criminal Minds, a large chunk of primetime broadcast TV is cut from the same cloth. With few exceptions, I have rarely found spinoff series like these to be unique enough to make me want to watch them in addition to their parents. The cities and specific focus of the shows may change, but at their core they're pretty much the same. I guess this is all about networks playing it safe: if it works, duplicate it ad infinitum. And I guess Forest, like Fishburne and many other talented actors, has decided it's better to have a safe TV gig rather than put everything in the unpredictable Hollywood movie basket. Still, can a show with such a veteran like Whitaker really cost less than, say, keeping the actresses on Criminal Minds around? Or is it all a big guessing game of math and chances: pay more for Whitaker, get a new show with him that does better, and the outlay makes up for the salary differences?
