It does at that, Mr Worf. And it's amazing to me that they incorporated
Hawking's comments on the subject so soon after he made them.

Sad thing, Gerald, is that everything you said CAN BE DONE. And the studios
would easily make their money. If it's piracy they worry over, they have to
deal with the certainty that piracy is a fact of life. No matter how hard
they try to stamp out torrents, more spring up every day. And don't ask
about the piracy industries in Russia and China.

call for a cameo on hit vampire drama True
Bloodhas been
rebuffed - the show's star Sam

does not need superstars to entice viewers.

The rapper is a huge fan of the racy bloodsucking series, and urged TV
bosses to get in touch with him to organize a guest appearance. He recently
said, "I love that show. I wish I could be on it. I'd be a hell of a
vampire,
don't you think? So what's happenin'? True Blood, get at me - Snoop Dogg

However, at a U.K. convention earlier this month, True Blood shape-shifter
Trammel admits the show's creator Alan Ball is not enthusiastic on giving
the rapper a tryout.

He tells fans, "Apparently Snoop has wanted to be on the show from the
beginning, but I don't think Alan Ball is going to let that happen. Having
such a high-profile person appear in the show, I think it would take us all
out of Bon Temps (show's location). (Alan) doesn't need to cast Snoop

[scifinoir2] As Ramadan Begins, Muslim iPhone Apps Abound

2010-08-14 Thread Kelwyn
http://abcnews.go.com/International/ramadan-iphone-apps-muslim-faithful/story?id=11391956

Need help with the holy month? There's an app for that ... a few, actually.

For the hundreds of millions of Muslims observing Ramadan, a month of fasting
that is one of the five pillars of the faith, a round of high-tech solutions
has emerged for remembering prayer times, browsing an electronic Quran and even
pointing oneself toward Mecca with the help of a GPS.

Islamic applications for the iPhone and iPad are abundant. The Qibla Compass
Pro points a red arrow toward the Kaaba, the shrine in Saudi Arabia considered
most sacred in Islam. Muslims are instructed to pray five times a day in its
direction.

Another app, the iQuran, comes with "verse by verse recitation and full text
search" of the Muslim holy book. An app called the Daily Dua -- dua being a
prayer of supplication -- is made especially for Ramadan. It offers hadiths, or
sayings of the Prophet Mohammed, and reminds users of the obligatory charity

2010-08-14 Thread Kelwyn
http://www.slate.com/id/2263462/pagenum/all/

As far as I can tell, the Twitter hashtag #wordsthatleadtotrouble got started
at about 11 a.m. Pacific Time on Sunday morning, when a user named Kookeyy
posted this short message: "#wordsthatleadtotrouble 'Don't Worry I gotchu." A
couple minutes later, Kookeyy posted another take on the same theme:
"#wordsthatleadtotrouble - I Love Yuh *kiss teeth*." On Twitter, people append
hashtags to categorize their messages—the tags make it easier to search for
posts on a certain topic, and they can sometimes lead to worldwide
call-and-response conversations in which people compete to outdo one another
with ever more hilarious, bizarre, or profane posts. A woman in South Africa
named Tigress_Lee moved the chatter in that direction: "#wordsthatleadtotrouble
'the condom broke'!" she wrote. From there, the meme took off. "We need to talk
#wordsthatleadtotrouble," declared BigJamaal (11,920 followers), and then he
proceeded to post a blizzard of suggestions, including "#wordsthatleadtotrouble
I dont know why you got that Magnum in your wallet you clearly live a Durex
lifestyle."

Re: [scifinoir2] Netflix movie deal could upend pay TV

Good deal for advancing the tech, but exclusive deals bother me...

Subject: [scifinoir2] Netflix movie deal could upend pay TV

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2010/08/netflix-and-epix-working-on-major-digital-partnership-to-shake-up-pay-tv-landscape.html

In a deal that could transform the landscape for digital movie distribution,
start-up pay-TV channel Epix is in serious negotiations to give Netflix
exclusive online rights to films from its three equity partners -- Paramount
Pictures, Lionsgate and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

The five-year arrangement would allow Netflix subscribers to watch movies such
as "Iron Man 2," "Dinner for Schmucks" and this week's release "The
Expendables" via the company's Internet streaming service, according to several
people familiar with the situation.

The agreement would make Netflix, best known for its DVD-by-mail business, a
potentially formidable competitor to Time Warner's dominant pay channel Home
Box Office, which has movies from Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox and Universal
Pictures. As more people watch Internet content on their televisions, Netflix
has been investing huge amounts of money to acquire content for its streaming
video service. It already has a deal with Liberty Media's pay channel Starz,
which brings it movies from Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures. Netflix also
recently acquired exclusive pay-TV window rights for films produced by
Relativity Media.

[scifinoir2] Anthony Mackie on Working With Hugh Jackman, Robots in Real Steel

Anthony Mackie on Working With Hugh Jackman, Robots in Real Steel

At last night's launch of Marc Ecko Cut & Sew's new ad campaign, featuring
[ http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2010/08/lohan_1.html ]a hologram of
Lindsay Lohan, longtime Ecko customer Anthony Mackie stayed far away from
the computer stations demoing digital Lindsay, preferring to flirt with
his many lady admirers in the VIP section. He's been on a roll since The
Hurt Locker's Oscar run made him a household name, so Vulture took this
opportunity grill him about reading suggestions for Lohan in rehab and his
spate of new projects.

Have you tried playing with the Lindsay Lohan hologram yet?
I haven't. I feel like something about virtual Lindsay Lohan turns me on
too much to play with it in front of people.

You can give her commands and make her do stuff. What would you have her
do?
I would have her tell me what I look good in. Guys want to know what looks
good to women, so you want a woman who you think is hot to tell you what
you look good in. I would like to be able to go on the site and have her
sit there and say, "You look good in that."

The webcam films her and then projects her into your world.
I don't want her in my world! I don't want her, like, in my house.

She's in rehab now. Got any reading suggestions for her?
I'm on a big David McCullough kick. I'm reading The Johnstown Flood and
1776. I'm a big history buff. So I'd just tell her to pick up some really
good history books and check out mistakes other people have made. Every
time I think I've done something stupid, I read about something like the
Johnstown Flood and I'm like, "You know what? I'm not so bad."

You're doing the sci-fi movie Real Steel with Hugh Jackman. You're a
promoter of robot boxers?
I'm the Don King of the future. It's an amazing movie. Shawn Levy is an
amazing director. And Hugh is honestly one of the coolest cats in the
business. All of my scenes are with him. He is basically a robot boxing
[trainer] and I am the promoter. So he has to come to me to get his fights
on.

Are there actual robots or is it CGI?
They're there! They built eight-foot-tall robots! Yes. You're standing
there and a big-ass robot comes by. They got the guy who did all the
robots for Jurassic Park and Jaws and all these crazy movies and got him
to build mechanical eight-foot-tall robots.

What do you do with the robots?
I run away from them! No, basically I introduce the robots; I promote the
robots; I speak with robots who want to fight other robots. I'm the Don
King of it all.

Do you have Don King's hair?
No, I don't. There are two hairstyles you will never find another man
wearing: Don King's and Al Sharpton's. They're done. They're done.

Evangeline Lilly retired from acting and then [
http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/05/evangeline_lilly_unretires.html
]unretired eight days later to do this movie. Did you talk about it?
No, but that's everyone's goal, to pull an Anthony Hopkins: "You know
what? I'm never gonna do this again."

After that, you're playing Buddy Bolden, the Cornet King of New Orleans
and the guy people think started jazz, and then track star Jesse Owens.
Are those skills you possess already?
You bet. I run three miles a day and I've been playing trumpet since
middle school. I think that's why they cast me. I can't talk about Jesse
Owens, but we finished filming Bolden two weeks ago.

You play your own trumpet music?
No, no, no. Wynton Marsalis played all the music. I just act the fuck out
of it.

I always get annoyed when people pretend to play musical instruments in
movies.
Well, as an actor, don't you think I get annoyed when musicians pretend to
act? Right back 'atcha.

How do you feel about all the rappers getting into acting?
A. [Rolls eyes, evading question.] I played the trumpet some. By the
end of the movie, I got my chops back up to where I could sort of make it
work. I learned all the music. Delfeayo Marsalis was my musical coach, so
he made sure everything I did was on point, that I had the right fingering
and stuff. So I think, and everyone else thinks it looks like I'm playing
the music.

Why are you taking so many roles based on real people?
Because those are the best stories! If someone came to me and said, "We
want you to play Spider-Man," I'd say, "Hell yeah!" But I'd have to get
them to change the name to "Brotha-man." That's who I'd be.

[scifinoir2] Lucas Announces Star Wars Blu-ray

2010-08-14 Thread Keith Johnson
This deleted scene with Vader reaching out to Luke seems pretty cool. It sounds
as if it has more of the grim feeling of "The Empire Strikes Back". I don't
have a Blu-Ray player yet, but not sure I'd buy this even if I did. I have at
least two versions Lucas has released over the years--and I'm not even an
ardent fan. I wonder how many different versions UPF's (Ultra Passionate Fans)
might have?

Speaking about what will be included, Lucas said, "They'll be different kinds

[material] for a lifetime. There's some really good material that will be
included in there, [including] more deleted scenes that you haven't seen yet."
Lucas said these newly released scenes would be kept separate from the film
itself.

In a surprise appearance, Mark Hamill then joined Lucas and Stewart on stage,
to introduce one of the new deleted scenes, which he said was his "original
entrance" in Return of the Jedi . Hamill noted the scene was short, but that it
was for the UPFs in the audience – the "ultra passionate fans."

We were then shown the scene, which would have taken place after Darth Vader
arrives on the second Death Star at the beginning of Return of the Jedi . We
see Vader walking down a corridor and into an elevator on the Death Star. We
then cut to Vader inside his medication chamber, a la Empire Strikes Back . As
Vader sits there, the camera moves into a close-up and we hear him reaching out
with the Force. "Luke. Luke. Join me in the dark side of the Force. My son. It
is the only way."

As Vader continues to repeat Luke's name, we cut to a tight close-up of Luke,
insinuating he is hearing his father's voice. it's a very ominous shot of Luke,
who is wearing his cloak and hood, with the shadows from the hood blocking out
his eyes completely - in line with how Darth Sideous' face is mostly hidden. As
Vader's voice fades away, the camera pans down to Luke's hands, and we see that
he is using a tool to complete work on his new lightsaber. Satisfied, he puts
the tool down and holds the lightsaber hilt up, igniting it – in what would
have been the first reveal of the green blade.

We cut to a shot from the side and see Luke is sitting inside a cave on
Tatooine, with C-3P0 standing outside, waiting for him – no doubt to receive
his orders to head to Jabba the Hutt.

That was it for the scene, but the crowd erupted in cheers at what was indeed a
very cool new moment, from films we are all quite familiar with.

The panel ended with one more surprise guest – Carrie Fisher . Alas, there were
no other deleted scenes shown to us today, but Fisher cracked to Lucas, "Did
you put the nude scenes back in?" She then turned to the audience and
deadpanned, "There was a huge me and Jabba porn scene. That's what got me into
drugs."

No further details were given on the Blu-rays as yet, which leave plenty to
speculate about. It's safe to say from the Return of the Jedi scene being shown
that this release will include all of the original trilogy, but while it seems
likely the answer is yes, there was nothing definitive stated about the
prequels being released simultaneously. And no, we didn't get any info on
whether the original, pre-Special Edition versions of the films will be part of
this set as well.

Suffice to say though, there will be more news to come in the months ahead, so
keep checking IGN for more on the Star Wars Blu-ray release!

Update: About five minutes after I published this story, I was handed
Lucasfilm's official press release for the Blu-rays. It confirms that all six
movies are being released on Blu-ray and that the set is coming out Fall 2011 -
so don't line up just yet! We're also told it will include, "documentaries,
vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and
never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives."

Star Wars fans should also check out my article about the new Empire Strikes
Back documentary that debuted at Celebration [Click Here!] , that I theorize
could possibly be part of the Blu-ray release.
