Well, Washington's in real danger of losing his 1.4 million dollar a year job, so I guess he should do whatever it takes. I wonder, though, is a treatment facility needed to cure him of possible homophobia? How exactly does a facility cure one of bigotry, and how bad is so bad you need it? Do they show you pictures of the people you hate, then shock you if you say something negative? Do members of the group you insulted surround you 24/7 and cure you via immersion treatment? Or do people sit around and talk about how their mom turned them into bigots? If it works, I can think of about eleventy-million folks that need cleansing of a host of varied bigoted thoughts!
And by the way, given that the problem here is homophobia, wouldn't it by a stone trip if Washington found himself sharing a room with a klansman or some other cretin who shares his specific prejudice, along with many others of their own? Or do they have special wings in this place: "Okay, folks, welcome to the 'No More Hate Clinic'. Homophobes have been assigned to rooms 1 - 25. Racists--sub-class, American Blacks, Mexicans and Indians--you'll be in rooms 26 - 50. Racists--sub-class, Foreigners--Rooms 51 -120. Conservative Christian Fundamentalists--you'll be taking the entire west wing, but you'll have to bunk with the folks who hate Yanni and John Tesh music". **************************************** [From eOnline.com gossip section] Isaiah Washington has entered a treatment facility. This is what sources connected to ABC and Touchstone have confirmed to me, after Life & Style magazine broke the story about an hour ago. According to my ABC sources, one of the options the higher-ups at ABC/Disney had been considering was to release Washington from the cast of Grey's Anatomy, without giving him a farewell episode. However, I'm told by an insider that Washington agreed to do "whatever it takes" to keep his position at Grey's and to make amends with the gay and lesbian community. He also vowed to seek help for his psychological issueshence, his entry into a treatment facility this morning. Grey's Anatomy boss Shonda Rhimes released the following statement: "I speak for all the executive producers here at Grey's Anatomy when I say that Isaiah Washington's use of such a disturbing word was a shocking and dismaying event that insulted not only gays and lesbians everywhere but anyone who has ever struggled for respect in a world that is not always accepting of difference. "We've been working within the Grey's family as well as with ABC and Touchstone Television to address the issue in a way that underscores the gravity of the situation while giving us all a foundation for healing. We applaud and encourage Isaiah's realization that he needs help and his subsequent choice to seek immediate treatment for his behavioral issues. "We appreciate the support the fans have always given our show, particularly during this stressful time. Creatively, we continue to strive to make the best television we can with the hope that our show reflects the talent, hard work and professionalism of our cast and crew. " Washington also released his own statement: With the support of my family and friends, I have begun counseling. I regard this as a necessary step toward understanding why I did what I did and making sure it never happens again. I appreciate the fact that I have been given this opportunity, and I remain committed to transforming my negative actions into positive results, personally and professionally. GLAAD president Neil Giuliano had this to say: "We are pleased to see him seeking help to deal with the issues he alluded to in his public statement last week."
