They say he's been there in Louisiana for 20 years, so maybe that's part of the
accent. And he's reincarnated? Who knew?

And your mentioning his "Louisiana accent" made me wonder where he hailed from.

Interesting bit, though, about him being recognized by a Tibetan lama as a

I caught one ep of this show while doing chores, the TV on in the background
for noise (my disclaimer!) I found the one show I saw--not sure if it was the
series premiere--very disturbing. Why? This show had three scenarios:

Scenario one: man carjacks a lady, Seagal and the cops get in hot pursuit, the
guy is cornered and arrested. The cops are all hyped up with that post-chase
adrenalin, revealing that the dude had a rifle and hockey mask. Was he planning
a little mass murder? Who knows? Most --not all, but most--of the cops are
white. The perp? Black man.

Scenario two:  Seagal and gang get flagged down while on patrol. The lady who
flags them down then complains about some dude who's getting on her nerves.
Seagal does his whispering narration ("Drunk people can be dangerous,
Confucious says") but the situation is basically resolved with chuckles and an
admonition for the drunk dude to go home. Most of the cops are white. All the
angry and drunk people? Black

Scenario three: Seagal and gang are patrolling a housing project and a dude
starts running. Again, hot pursuit ensues, the perp is caught, and a gun and
pot in his possession seized. Most of the cops? White. The perp?  Black.

I walk away for a while, come back midday through the second ep aired. A crazed
man is arrested, shirtless and talking foolishness. Once in the police car he
proceeds to kick out a window. Most of the cops? White. The perp? Black.
Following that pleasantry, a carload of black men is rousted and searched,
giving up a gun and 95K in cash. Oh how proud I feel of my people!

Now i do see that there are white folks being chased and arrested too, but I
was not happy to see at least 1-1/2 shows dealing only with black folk. What a
loving tribute to New Orleans.

Seagal is a bit irritating, with his narrative, which seems to relate
everything to his "years of study of the martial arts". He's talking about zen
in shooting guns, zen in chasing people, zen in driving cars. He even comments
on the crazed handcuff guy, "he's not in a zen moment".

I see nothing to recommend it over "Cops", and I never watched that show. I'm
not sure listening to Seagal's mystical ramblings and attempts to apply the Tao
to every collar is worth my time. It *might* be worth a laugh to see him drag
his fleshy body in pursuit of fast-running brothers, and  come up gasping for
air, or to make fun of his oddly intermittent Louisiana accent, but naw

Sammo Hung. He and Yeun Biao are Jackie Chan's "brothers" from the Peking

2009-12-03 Thread Keith Johnson

I hear that. I always find it fascinating to see martial arts masters who are
decidedly out of shape on the service. Of course, the skills are still there,
but as you intimate, how long could someone like Seagal last in a fight before
tiring? Guess he'd have to be quick and lethal as hell.
Remember that really heavyset kung fu guy who had his own series in teh States
for a minute? Samuel or Sammo someone? The show was "Martial Law", I believe.
he was incredible: fast, nimble, agile, skilled. It was amazing watching that
bulk move like that.

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: Steven Seagal: Lawman

2009-12-02 Thread Mr. Worf
There are a few people that have serious skills that you wouldn't tell by
looking at them. For example, the comedian Joe Rogan is a black belt in Tae
Kwon Do and won the US title 4 times and a Grand Champion title, but he is
more known for his standup comedy and being a host on tv.

yeah, Seagal actually trained in Japan to a real master, when he was younger.
As far as that goes, he's the real deal.
