Re: [Scottish] Streaming / webcast solution provider.

Andy,

I'm not aware of any big Scottish providers but have you tried Servecast.
They are based in Ireland and handle a LOT of football stuff very well.

[Scottish] Distributed.net Update - A Friday afternoon call to action ;)

2003-02-21 Thread Cameron Logie
Hi all,

Just a quick update on the ScotLUG Distributed.net RC5-72 key cracking,
for those that are vagely interested.

We (or I more specifically), have mangaged to get the team into 1041st
place, which gives us a 1 in 7,427 chance that'll we'll win the money for
the beer kitty.
Remember that the individual that finds the key gets $1000 with the team
getting $1000 too. That should buy a few rounds at least and possibly a
portable distro server for the meetings.

Even just a few more machines doing some background crunching would be
greatly appreciated, so if you can spare some of your Friday afternoon
(and some CPU cycles), please download the client for your machine and
get cracking. :)

Some URLs for you now;
Check the current ScotLUG stats at
http://stats.distributed.net/team/tmsummary.php?project_id=8&team=940186139

To see how the dosh gets dished out go to
http://stats.distributed.net/misc/money.php?project_id=8

To download the clients for your platform go to
http://distributed.net/download/clients.html

To join the ScotLUG team, just configure the client with your email
address, wait a few days for your info the appear on the stats page and
join the team at
http://stats.distributed.net/participant/pjointeam.php?team=940186139

That's all for now folks.
I hope that the mere mention of prize money and beer stirs the soul.
Have a good weekend.

Regards,
Cammy.

RE: [Scottish] Good ISP for ADSL business and hosting?

2003-01-31 Thread Cameron Logie
Hi all,

Perhaps choosing the same ISP for access and hosting might not be the best
plan. If all your eggs are in one basket, there's not really much
redundancy if things go tits up.

I personally use Eclipse Internet ADSL Lite 500 service.
It's only £26.73/month for 512/256 DSL at 50:1 contention.
They also give you 8 IP's with that, provided you can justify the use of
them for RIPE.
Uptime and availability have been excellent and there is no problem
running incoming SMTP.

Regards,
Cammy.

[Scottish] Distributed.net - RC5-72 cracking

2003-01-20 Thread Cameron Logie
Hi All,

I've taken the liberty of setting up a team for ScotLUG on the
distributed.net site with the hope of attracting some of you to join the
cracking effort.

If you've got no idea what this is about, please visit
http://www.distributed.net and do a wee bit of reading.

To join 'Team ScotLUG', you need to have downloaded the client, configured
it with your email address, completed some blocks, submitted them to the
keyserver and waited for a day until the stats rebuild.
After that, you should be able to search for your email address and get
your password sent to you (link at the bottom of your stats).

The main stats page can be accessed at http://stats.distributed.net

The team page is at
http://stats.distributed.net/team/tmsummary.php?project_id=8&team=940186139
Click the link at the bottom to join.

With any luck, those of you with spare cluster time (aye right) can devote
some cycles to it.

Any problems, gimme a shout.

Regards,
Cammy.

Re: [Scottish] Slightly OT: hardware problem

2003-01-19 Thread Cameron Logie
George,

In the past, I've had problems with machines (esp those with Athlons) that
were resolved by getting a new power supply.
I was getting big disk errors, random crashing and
motherboard-not-powering-up problems.

Did the new case that you bought have an PSU rated for an Athlon ?

Re: [Scottish] Internal modems

2003-01-13 Thread Cameron Logie
OK, according to http://www.yourvote.com/pci/vendors.txt the device seems
to be a '536EP V.92 PCI (DSP) Data Fax Modem'.

I had one of these, thinking that it was a hardware modem, where it
actually turned out to be another CPU based modem with some DSP functions
on it.
What you can maybe try is the Intel HaM driver for linux but be prepared
for some closed-source footering and possibly a kernel recompile to get it
working.

FYI Have a look at
http://www.intel.com/design/modems/support/drivers_linux.htm

Cammy.

[Scottish] Computing Power debate

2002-09-27 Thread Cameron Logie

Hi,

Following on from the debate last night about slow software on high spec
machines, don't you think that developers of 3 or 4 years ago were,
perhaps, more prepared to use lower level programming languages to gain
additional speed ?

Maybe another problem is that compiler optimisations aren't being fully
exploited so that the software can run on any x86 box.
I wonder what a 686 optimised version of Word would be like, for example.

I blame nested API's for it. :)

Cheers,
Cammy.
