Agreed. I think I'm right in saying: those USB modems are
winmodems, in that they push a bunch of the work of the ADSL
routing onto your system, which they assume to be a Windows box.
That's why you have to have (the correct) drivers, and things have
to work just right for the USB modem to do anything at all.

In the case of a separate ADSL router, it's handling all the ADSLness,
and your machine just sees an Ethernet port to send packets to.

For not much more money, you get an ADSL router with four Ethernet
ports (possibly plus wireless, which is _always_ more trouble, in my
experience :-(), so it's a no-brainer to hook up that 2nd, 3rd, and
4th computer/whatever. As Colin says, spend the money and rest easy.

Actually, not always true.

In some cases I have seen (in particular the ntl cable modems) it's
actually providing ethernet over USB, which got into the kernel somewhere
around 2.4.18 IIRC. However, the Speedtouch ADSL modems (which are really
common) _are_ winmodems, but do have Linux drivers. However, I still agree
with buying your own ADSL kit - it's not expensive these days. A (very
bargain basement) ebuyer adsl modem (no router - just a modem) comes in at
about £20 IIRC.

Derrick,
As I have not yet achieved Internet access from my Linux machine, I am not the
best person to ask!
However, I think internet access is available from most ISPs, independent of
your operating system.
We have BT broadband at home, and I'm ever hopeful that when I have a fully
working linux installation, it will include internet access.
I am sending this reply through Scotlug, as you are more likely to get useful
help from other members.
You should register as a member, so that you get circulated with current
postings ... I can't remember how to do this ...
Can somebody enlighten Derrick, please?

I helped someone out recently with a similar problem, what I found was
if I did'nt go through all the options when setting up kdialer then
the ppp script was not completed correctly and missed certain options.
Try setting up your dial up connection again and go through every
setting even if you do not change some of them. You can compare before
and after by taking a copy of your current one. This was in Suse 9.2,
Suse 9.1 worked fine.

able to get to YAST Online Update (YOU) from the desktop link. Downloaded

perfectly.

Unfortunately could not identify actual cure. This was on Tuesday of this

Mostly when using a dial-up ISP people get their ip address, default
gateway, and nameservers dynamically.
My guess is that because you have set these as static.
YAST/Network Devices/Modems/Providers/Edit/Next - select:
Modify DNS when connected
I did this and it made no difference. I noted the settings in this box are
now-
dial on demand - not selected
modify DNS when conn - selected
Automatically retrieve DNS - selected
Stupid mode - not selected
Ext Firewall Interface - not selected
Automatically retrieve DNS (or insert P: 194.134.5.5 S: 194.134.5.55 for
Wannadoo) -
I tried both automatic and these names, but no difference.
/IP Details - selt to Dynamic IP address as suggested.

I made these changes, restarted machine and dialling still seemed to work
but internet browser gave the same unknown host message.
I also tried Willie's suggestion 'ping 66.102.9.99' for google after
dialling in, and got a msg saying connect : network is unreachable.
I have dumped windows altogether, so there's no going back!
Further suggestion anyone?

yes, its your dns settings you will need to configure by the looks of it.

[23:11] * Dns resolved www.google.com to 66.102.9.99

Try pinging google directly with that IP and see if it gets through.
If so, its definatly the DNS.
Do you still have access to your Windows install?
Once your connecting in windows, do to the cmd line and type ipconfig
/all and note down the DNS Server IP's that it shows you.

Reboot into linux and open (i *think*) /etc/resolv.conf and pop in the
nameservers like this:

nameserver 212.67.202.2
nameserver 212.67.203.246
nameserver 194.73.73.172

(p.s. if you cant get your dns ips or dont have windows up then feel
freew to use those ips instead, they should work)
