It sounds like you might want to try downloading the full set of Debian
CDs. There are dozens, though. One of the reasons why Ubuntu leaves so
much out is because if you wanted to fit it all on a single disk you
would need a CD drive the size of a truck, and special tools to mount
the flying saucer-sized disk.

Ubuntu is aimed at being a simple, easy-to-use desktop OS. The idea is
that you put the CD in, say "Yes" a lot at the prompts, and you have
something that looks good and works well for people who want to surf the
'net and read email. It excels at this (and this is a confirmed
Debian-hater saying it). I've even switched to Xubuntu for my desktop.

The problem with the "repackaged Debian" distros is that they do all
tend to assume you're on a fairly hefty connection. They're not alone
in this - building stuff from [pkgsrc|ports] in [Net|Free]BSD does a
similar thing. Unfortunately the distros with more stuff in them tend
also to be more complicated to set up. That said, you could take a look
at Slackware.

MEPIS is just a repackaging of Debian too. If you didn't like Ubuntu, then
you are probably equally as likely to dislike Mepis.

People use Ubuntu because it is an extremely well integrated distribution
which is, for the most part, simple to use and run, with a large community
behind it. Plus, the very fact that it is based on Debian is seen as a good
thing.

Unfortunately no Linux distribution is particularly good if you do not have
internet access, and dialup is almost as bad. It would appear that, for the
most part, the issue of winmodems has never been resolved, and is
increasingly unlikely with the spread of broadband. Even with a working
dialup connection, getting updates for a system is likely to be a lengthy
process.

FWIW I have been using Ubuntu on my laptop (all devices working, including
wifi, although I haven't tried the modem) since Warty Warthog and one of
the most impressive things for me is the amount of progress they have made
in <2 years. I switched my desktop from Debian Unstable to Breezy (and now
Dapper) earlier this year, and couldn't be happier.

If something doesn't work for you in Ubuntu, then I strongly urge you to
log a bug - the community (IME) has been very responsive to resolving
issues with the distribution, and this has been key in the improvements
they have made.

Hi,

I too first install Linux using Mandrake 10.0 from a free CD in a
Linux magazine. I was impressed with all the included packages. When
Ubuntu was release I thought I would give it a try. Big mistake! Too
few packages. Problems with dialup and wireless. All the online
documentation assumes that you have a speedy broadband connection. If
I want to install a package I need to go to the local library,
Clydebank, download the required packages then burn them on a CD. I
have worked in the IT business for some years and I thought of
introducing myself to Linux apps via Python, mySQL. No development
environment was available on the supplied CDs.

I cannot understand why Ubuntu is so popular. It seems to be a
repackaging of Debian. It is a step backwords for Linux.

I am considering migrating to MEPIS. Does anyone have a MEPIS CD they
can give me? Thanks.

Hi

Good to see that linux is gaining a bit more exposure from the press, (even if
it is ubuntu, j/k). You never know what kind of interest this may spark, if
any. I, for example, was first introduced to Mandrake/Mandriva (and Linux)
after a short article in the D/R around the release of 10.0 (/10.1? I can never
remember). Praise for coverage that not many tabloids have taken up on!

Cheers
Craig

Hi

Ubuntu 6.06 gets a positive write-up in today's Daily Record:
http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sexandhealth/features/tm_objectid=17164816%26method=full%26siteid=66633-name_page.html
does that mean Linux is ready for the desktop?

It's right next to a bit about MS stopping support for 98/ME.

Harry

Fair play to Harry for letting everyone know, it's good to see Linux getting
more of a mention in the mainstream press, but the article was typical of
the Record (and tabloids in general) in being light on real content. If you
didn't know what Linux was, it was meaningless; it was also tucked away in a
section called Tech Heads, which to me is somewhat of a derogatory phrase.
Given the quality of the other two items included in the column, I'd hardly
be inclined to give it the same level of credibility as, say, the Technology
section that comes with Thursday's Grauniad, which routinely discusses
Microsoft being twats and Linux being cool, et al.

It's un-newsworthy because there's no real context or any real appeal to
anyone who didn't already know about Ubuntu. The article might well have
said "Blobby flangeracker Ubuntu is releasing a new melongramfer this week,
which features improved sandwichratifier, plinkysandbanks, and updated
jollyglingers" given the newspaper's target audience, which is hardly ABC1
to start with.

The Record is also known as the Daily Ranger not without good reason, and
given it's primary readership is in West and Central Scotland, it's not
unfair to mention that many people aren't too keen on its position on
certain things. I personally can't stand the fucking thing, but I simply
show my disgust by never buying it :)

Since when did this forum become subject to religious/political/commercial
bias?

I would imagine that Harry simply posted the item because it was about Linux,
it was in the 'fairly major' press and that it would be of interest to know
that the general public are now getting to know about Linux in a good light.
I can't find anything about the article which is untrue or un-newsworthy.
