Lirva is a mass-mailer that businesses may have an edge on as it spreads via executable files that most enterprises may already block. ExploreZip.E, however, could be destructive. It exploits an Outlook flaw and has the ability to overwrite several file types. http://www.searchsecurity.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid14_gci873261,00.html SCHOOLS CHOOSE ALTERNATIVE E-MAIL | Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel The Broward County school system in Florida has opted for the lowest bid on its new e-mail platform. It will implement the Centrinity First Class system, which came in at about one-sixth the cost of Domino and about one-tenth the cost of Exchange. APPDETECTIVE SUPPORTS IBM DB2 | eWEEK Application Security Inc. released this week a version of its application security vulnerability scanner for IBM DB2. The software performs network-based penetration tests and security audits and presents version numbers, patches and other inventory-specific information for use in security analysis. In addition to DB2, AppDetective supports Lotus Domino, Oracle, Microsoft and Sybase databases. The computer proclaimed 8,500 patients dead -- news that came as quite a surprise to those people who were not wearing toe tags and had all their vital signs. So what happened? A computer glitch, of course. Evidently, during a file update an important digit was dropped -- the one that distinguishes between "deceased" and "discharged to home." That's a pretty big digit.
