BUFFER OVERFLOW STRIKES SOLARIS | IDG News
A pair of security watchdogs (ISS and CERT/CC) has found a flaw in
Solaris that has the potential to give attackers the highest levels
of access to a vulnerable system. The hole, which is of the buffer
overflow variety, is in Sun's implementation of the X Windows Font
Service, which runs by default on all Solaris versions. Sun says it's
working on the problem; in the meantime ISS says disable that XFS.

ANALYSTS: OPEN-SOURCE OVERTAKES MS AS SECURITY RISK | eWEEK
Two Aberdeen analysts said open-source software and Linux
installations have overtaken Microsoft as the leading security risks.
The researchers said 16 security alerts released by CERT in October
cited flaws in open-source products, while seven were related to
Microsoft.

SOLARIS 9 FOR INTEL POSTED TO SUN SITE | IDG News
Take a look at Sun's Web site. An early access version of Solaris 9
for Intel is up there. Sun claims it is now going great guns with the
OS and has big plans for Solaris x86, including, for example, moving
more Sun ONE software onto the platform. The download is available at
http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris and costs $20. The big release
is set for next month.

SUN SHARPENS BLADES FOR TELECOM | InternetNews
Lucent Technologies is calling on Sun to help ring up global business
in office phone systems, customer relationship management, network
management, mobile high-speed data systems, unified communication
messaging systems, and business continuity systems. Sun's
newly-sharpened Netra blade servers and current Netra HA Suite
Foundation Services software helped seal the deal.

SUN, IBM STORAGE ALLIANCE FOLDS, BUT SNIA'S CIM GROUP FORGES ON
A storage management alliance formed by IBM, Sun, Veritas and HDS
lasted all of three weeks before it dissolved, but the companies
promise that their pledge to bring to market CIM-based management
technology lives on. (SearchStorage.com)

THE MISSING LINK | Software helps pandas pair up

Did you know pandas have personals? Some new species-specific
software is helping the threatened animals find their perfect mates.
Breeding pandas in captivity is a tricky business, so experts
designed the software to help pair pandas from zoos across the globe
using their health and bloodlines as matchmaking criteria. But it's
certainly more fun to think of what a panda personal would look like:
Single black and white male in search of endangered female for
short-term relationship. Must want cubs, enjoy long strolls in an
enclosure and love bamboo. No smokers. Are you the one? (Reuters)
