Take a look at Belarc Advisor. It's a free tool that will inventory all of the
hardware and software for each machine. The report it creates is in HTML, but if you
need it in other formats I'm sure it would be easy to write a little script that did
whatever you wanted.

I am administrating a small LAN all with WinXP Pro installed. now the
boss want me to keep a ascii log file that keeps track of every programs
that have been installed on each computer(every computer has his owner
too) and all the windows patches that have been installed. The best
method i thought of so far is to scan every computer's registry to get
installed software's information, is there anything better and easier
ways? and as for windows patches, I really have no idea at all :(
