I just checked with APC's networking guy and he says yes, the client machines
should be able to access this (it's our LAN).

No, it's a LAN connection via eth0 (integrated ethernet on the PC).

No, this is via eth1, a 3Com NIC that we put into the PC.

I was trying to do this at home with a laptop and a USB broadband modem during
the holidays, but didn't get far. That's in the queue, after we get our PC
School Server set up right.

NetworkManager is now disabled (I just checked).

The server is now coming up with the desired static address from a cold boot. I
was going to test again with my SOAS but unfortunately the stick got corrupted.
I am now making another one.

Here is what the VM sees

2GB RAM It has about 240mb free.
 beam is running around 300mb.
gadget is running around 500mb

Little load on the CPU right now.
It is assigned 1CPU up to 2Ghz

ejabberd has
7247 registered users
19 online users. This is close to the average i have seen between 20-30

Great, now what we need is specific details; a machine model &
configuration so that someone can go out and buy the exact same
machine. And how many total user accounts there are, etc.

Dear Martin,

Greetings and a Happy New year.

The XS 0.6 is loaded on a Dell computer for the Sichuan deployment. I never
been in person for Sichuan or Bhutan deployment to experience firsthand how
well it work.

I will try to see if I could get details from those who were there doing the
real work.

A photo of the XS and with the Altai A3 Smart WiFi sitting on top. Heard the
Wifi connection was not very stable for whatever reasons

In the case of VMs you need the resources allocated to the VMs rather
than the hardware specs as the hardware specs don't really mean much.

Hello Martin,

Happy New Year !

We run our XS inside virtual machines. I have XS inside virtualbox on my
Lenovo T61 laptop

Santa Rosa Core 2 DUO 2.0 Ghz
4GB DDR2
120GB HDD

while Solutiongrove runs a couple of XS installations inside VMWare ESXi
(http://www.vmware.com/products/esxi/).

I'll try to get the hardware info where ESXi is installed from our
service provider.

ESXi has these fancy charts and graphs on usage and stuff about the
virtual machines running, I'll see if it's possible to extract that info
for you. Hopefully that data is still available.

Best,

Hamilton

[Server-devel] We need: examples of XS hardware in use --

2010-01-12 Thread Martin Langhoff
List, David, Reuben,

We are getting increasing enquiries "what hardware can we use for an
XS in a school with N laptops?", and frankly the
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XS_Recommended_Hardware is a bit slim on
concrete recommendations.

So I need your help -- I've added some info in the "hardware known to
work" section, but I'd like David to put more info on the exact model
of MSI Wind he's using, additional hardware, number of laptops
supported, and any extra notes.

Similarly, Reuben, I need more info on what hw the OLPCCorps crowd is using.

And anyone else that's running an XS (hi Hamilton!)... we need your hw
profile and your numbers.

Additionally, I've added a 'server sizing' section. It'll be great to
get corroboration that the CPU/RAM to number of users match what you
are using in the field, and whether your server gets in trouble when
usage spikes.

cheers,

100% agreed. Several points here on the technical side;

- It should be rather easy to get mediawiki going on the XS - yum
install your dependencies, get the php code, etc. In fact, "yum
install mediawiki" will get you v1.14.0 (which may or may not be
current enough for your needs). Either way, you will probably need to
do some apache configuration (make a new file in /etc/httpd/conf.d )
And the "vanilla" mediawiki will want to use MySQL which comes with
its own warning stickers.

 - Whether wikieducator publishes their database in a format you can
use to run an "offline server" wikieducator, that's for them to
answer. Feel free to insist -- it's definitely worthwhile content.
Watch out for "content" that is merely an external link -- it'd be a
cruel tease in an offline environment.

 - Wikieducator may find it easier for themselves (and for users of
the content like us) to export a *static* version of their content --
Wikipedia does this every month or so, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Database_download --
specifically the reference to "pages-articles.xml.bz2"

If you do any (or various of the above), do share your "steps to
setup" on our XS_Techniques_and_Configuration page :-)

cheers,

Ray,

XS has 2 NICS,

 - the "WAN" or "external network": are you using wlan0 for this?

 - the wired connection to the AP - I expect you are using eth0, right?

If you are using wlan0, see

That's a bit nasty. Make sure it is disabled as a service via
chkconfig, and that it doesn't start after a reboot.
