It is also useful to keep connections open over a link that keeps redialling. You might continue to get a new IP address from your service provider every few minutes, but connections through the tunnel survive intact. -- James Cameron http://quozl.linux.org.au/ ___ Server-devel mailing list Server-devel@lists.laptop.org http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/server-devel

I would definitely suggest openvpn, since you start the daemon, It keeps trying to connect, so basically you never lose access to the server 2010/11/24 James Cameron : > Yes, I've done something similar. > > For providers that do not provide a return routable IP address, I used > ppp and openvpn, otherwise I used ppp and dyndns. > > Making the connection with ppp is relatively straightforward, a script > can activate pppd with the necessary arguments, there's no need to stuff > around with NetworkManager if you don't want to. > > For an example script that makes a connection: > http://quozl.linux.org.au/darcs/eee-bpw/usr/sbin/bpw > > This was part of an eeePC support package for a service available in > Australia, see: > http://quozl.linux.org.au/bp3-usb/eee.phtml > > And my original research on which this was based was here: > http://quozl.linux.org.au/bp3-usb/ > > Once the connection is up, OpenVPN can be started, or dyndns activated > to register the IP. > > The key to writing a script that runs pppd and then starts OpenVPN, is > to use the updetach option to pppd. Re: [Server-devel] call home setup via 3G modems
Yes, I've done something similar. For providers that do not provide a return routable IP address, I used ppp and openvpn, otherwise I used ppp and dyndns. Making the connection with ppp is relatively straightforward, a script can activate pppd with the necessary arguments, there's no need to stuff around with NetworkManager if you don't want to. For an example script that makes a connection: http://quozl.linux.org.au/darcs/eee-bpw/usr/sbin/bpw This was part of an eeePC support package for a service available in Australia, see: http://quozl.linux.org.au/bp3-usb/eee.phtml And my original research on which this was based was here: http://quozl.linux.org.au/bp3-usb/ Once the connection is up, OpenVPN can be started, or dyndns activated to register the IP. The key to writing a script that runs pppd and then starts OpenVPN, is to use the updetach option to pppd. This returns success from the command once the connection is established. -- James Cameron http://quozl.linux.org.au/ ___ Server-devel mailing list Server-devel@lists.laptop.org http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/server-devel
[Server-devel] Assistance with Setting up the School Server
Hey guys, Iam new to setting up the school server. So far I have downloaded and installed the ISO unto a dell optiplex 240. It picks up the eth0 but iam not sure what next to do in order for it to work. What else should I do? I remember seeing someone being able to access the school server from another machine and it wasn't an XO. I also know that apache is running but iam not able to connect to it. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. [Server-devel] school server Moodle enrollment
Hi, We have a curriculum workshop going on in Rwanda. I would like the participants to be able to edit their courses on the school server using Moodle. Most of them have XOs. I have entered their laptop serial numbers in /etc/coursecreator but they are still assigned student roles somewhere in the enrollment logic. Is there any way I can give them course creator capabilities. Right now, we must use non-XO laptops which can login to edit the content. Thanks, Tony ___ Server-devel mailing list Server-devel@lists.laptop.org http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/server-devel
