SD Rack Pinnion replacement Question

2006-12-03 Thread Matt McKeon
Hello,

I am in the process of replacing the rack pinion on my 89 Shelby Daytona. I
have reached step 4 in the factory service manual - removing crossmember. I
have removed all four bolts and have the K-frame supported by a jack.

The question I have is what is the easiest way to disconect the steering
column from the steering gear?

Thanks,

Matt,
I had a similar problem with my 86 turbo Z. I thought the rack was held to
the column with a bolt or clip too, but it wasn't. What I did was position a
couple jackstands just below the K-Frame and tapped a little bit on the contol
arms with a hammer and it just wiggled out. When I knocked it loose, it fell
just a little bit onto the jackstands instead of all the way to the ground. I
saw Bob's post on bungee cording the new rack up there and I wish I had seen
that when I did mine! I ended up removing the column from inside the car and
lining it up that way, which was a bit PITA but it got it done.

SD plastic repair and sickness

2006-12-03 Thread Dennis Sherry

Shawn:
I have had good luck restoring plastic bits with JB weld.
It may take a few applications to build up larger bits, but when cured
it seems to hold up well.
The texture may be an issue in some cases, but I have been able to
convert to a wrinkle finish with good results.

Jeff:
By your signature lines I think we have caught the same virus!!
I would like to build a KR2S.
Most of my flight training has been in 150's and 152's with the
remainder in a Tomahawk.

I have several turbo Dodges.
We have a PT turbo.
My wifes name is Sherry.

What are the specs on your VW engine?
Pauter machine makes parts to build a 3.3 liter VW.
This might allow a low rpm direct driven setup with higher output.
Maybe Megasquirt for fuel.

Subject: SD painting/refinishing the nerf bars and other plastic bits

Hey gang,
Does anyone out there have a guide or some information on painting the
black nerf bumpers and mirrors on our cars? I'm wanting to pull all
these off my Lancer and re-do them while I wait on the engine.
I guess my biggest question is, what compound do I to fill in the gaps
or chunks that are chipped out?

thanks!

Subject: SD thanks on the CV advice

Ok, thanks to everyone on the advice on getting the CV axle sepoarated. I
finally decided to soak it in penetrate and then used a body hammer held
against the CD housing while the half shaft was clamped in my vise. I
then
took a 3lb hammer and stuck the body hammer while hoding it against
the CV

housing. It worked fine.
The car is back together and with the addition of a new gas line on
the tank

side and a new battery, she runs as good as she did when I put her away 2
years ago. Just think, 6 months ago I was trying to give her away free to
anyone on this list. She is rust free dent free and other then the faded
paint, she is straight as an arrow.
I am so glad I have stayed with this forum. It helped when I rebuilt her
engine over 2 years ago and now I am excited about her again.

Aren't the holes threaded to a different size?
