Re: SD Shelby Lancer Hubcaps

2004-08-20 Thread David Salamone
I was just looking at an old Shelby Lancer brochure, and noticed that the
hubcaps were tiny, round things with the CS logo. Mine are, and always
have been, 5-lobed units that partially encircle the lug-nuts. Which are
correct? I couldn't find any 5-lobed caps, up here in Worstern Oregon,
when I asked at the local Tire Factory.

I guess the question should be are the small round caps OK for the Shelby
Lancer, or do I need the 5-lobed units to be correct? I'd hate to attend
a Cruise-In, and display this brochure, only to find that my hubcaps are
 incorrect!

These were the pre-production prototype pieces used for the photo shoot
scheduled far before the regular production pieces were ready. Press photos
have to be taken long before the cars are in production so final versions of
each piece are not always ready to photograph.

One of the only people out there that may actually have one of these
prototype center caps is our own SDAC national club president, Barry Goodall
since he owns one of the original prototype 1987 Shelby Lancer's used for
testing car magazine photo shoots. The rear CS medallion was different as
well.

If I remember correctly what they used was the plastic portion from their
regular version of the Shelby Lancer wheel (which was manufactured and sold
in assorted sizes by Carroll Shelby Wheels, Inc. as a model called the
CSS).

They added in a earlier prototype version of the center medallion which
looked rounder like the typical Ford version CS logos. What you've got on
there now is correct, all the production models wear the same ones that you
have.

On a side note be extra careful with the ones you do have, because the
plastic portion hasn't been available new in many years and the chrome
finish CS center medallion that I reproduced is also out of stock for the
time being. However I do have a handful of the goldtone versions left in the
same size for only 15.00 each.

The plastic fingers that mount them to the rim tend to dry up and become
brittle and break off which can cause the center caps to fall off the wheel.

Re: SD Shelby Lancer Hubcaps

2004-08-20 Thread Barry Goodall
What David wrote in his reply is accurate. However I have the 5 lobed
version on the Shelby Lancer prototype wheels also. I would really like to
find a set of the old round ones to make my car accurate to the photos in
the dealer brochure. It is my car pictured in that brochure (the vin is
visible in the underhood shot - 106340) but at some point in time they
changed the wheel centers on my car to the production pieces. I was also
told that it was my car on the cover of the January 87 Autoweek issue. The
car is signed by Carroll Shelby in two places and also signed by Neil
Hannemann who successfully raced the car in the 87 racing series against
BMW's.

Clear silicone sealant was used on my center caps to secure them to the
wheels. I would suggest that being done to any wheels that haven't had it
done. The caps can still be removed from the wheel when changing tires, but
the silicone will keep them from shaking off. Of course it needs to be
reapplied if the caps have been removed for service.
