SD Thanks, and 86 GLHT paint completed in flat black epoxy

2005-06-20 Thread Clay Cooke
First off, thanks to everyone who replied to my email about removing the
door handles, and bumper brackets. I did get them removed and do appreciate
the help (and yes Andy, I probalby do need a FSM for this car ;) )

SO, I did get my 86 GLHT painted this weekend, with a nice flat black epoxy,
PPG DP40 Black Epoxy Primer to be exact. This is a very durable paint, UV
resistant, and IMO has a very nice look on the car. It wont fade in the sun
light like many normal primers will, and it is considered the ultimate
primer/sealer for lots of body shops.

Paint prep is the same as for any other paint. We may have gone a bit
overboard in that we removed everything from the cars exterior except the
tail lights, head lights, and fog lights. The car was wet sanded all over
with 400, then taped off, washed, wiped down, tacked clothed, and then shot.
It turned out great for any paint, and super-dee-duper for primer ;).

and yes, this is the FINAL coat/color. Other than some minor body work, this
is how the car will be. No fancy-schmancy clean coats or base coats for me.

Here are some before and after pictures:

I think it turned out pretty good. Ive painted a few cars in the past, so I
have a fairly good handle of whats going on, and a good paint gun. :) I
managed to cover the entire car and hood with 1 quart of paint (2 quarts
mixed paint). Its still not cheap, but much better than rattle can and it
will last. One thing I cant decide is whether I want to put the OEM style
red decals/stripes on the car, or put everything back in black, so the
entire car, decals, and everything is black.

Looks good.. I wonder if that would shine right up with a coat of clear? heh..
As for decals, yeah, go with the red decals, that'd look awesome. :)

I could make the decals in a custom color combo such as flat black for the
inner portion (normally red) of the lettering and gloss black for the outer
portion. It would have a subtle phantom look to them.
