Yeah, that site needs some love and given that the prices there are
pre-tax it is kind of a kludge

Air Deccan seems to be taking a large bundle of flak these days it was
good earlier. IndiGo and Go seem to have nice clean interiors (more the
former than the latter), KIngfisher is kind of good although so is
SpiceJet. One thing you might want to do is buy direct rather than the
online travel sites (that's a tip from my wife who did prove it
conclusively yesterday)

Jet's nice but it does have some odd flight times sometimes

Exactly. Use the travel sites for fare comparisons, schedules and
possible connections, nothing more. Here in Gibraltar, if I take an
online price quote printout for a set of flights to any high-street
travel agent, I get guaranteed cheaper-by at least £10 tickets for the
same flights.

She's biased of course, and I suspect her advice only holds true for
some of the higher end travel agencies that have higher service
standards.

In India (due to the NRI fares) I use an agent of the Uniglobe
franchisee chain - www.uniglobe.com. I have email/phone access 24x7 to
them, hotels/visas/other consular help, immediate help in case of
flight delays/cancellations/missed connections etc. which an online
site can be hardly expected to provide.

for domestic, that doesnt hold good

for international - agreed 100%.. besides a good TA can do stuff like book
you into specific fare buckets (V for example is the lowest class that's
economy and still earns 100% miles on air france / lufthansa..), also can
block a booking and hold it for a few days instead of ticketing immediately
as would happen on an online booking site, etc.

The "travel agency" doesnt matter as much as the agent who does the
booking. Find a clueful agent and have some clue about how an airline gds
like amadeus or galileo works, and you have got it made.

My wife, who is a travel agent, has a ready supply of online booking
horror stories. Everything from broken websites that bill you but
don't actually book a ticket, issued tickets that the airline doesn't
know about and more. Nothing malicious, just a general air of total
incompetence.

She also says that they're based around the concept of making the
customer do the travel agent's job -- with predictable results.

Her advice: use online booking sites to help you negotiate with your
travel agent, but don't actually book tickets through them.

Oh great.

They haven't yet finished processing one booking for me, and I already
hate them. Their web site is dismal. Their feedback form doesn't work.
Their people are as broken as their web site.

I booked two tickets on the 5th of March, and they were sent a cheque
the next day. Then they sat around twiddling their thumbs, it appears,
all the while insisting that everything was fine, and that the tickets
would be issued "real soon now". Then on the 25th, they said "oh, we're
not able to book the first leg of your flight, so we'll have to change
the bookings". That despite repeatedly assuring us that the tickets
were confirmed.

And now they're pointing fingers at everything but themselves.

I like the general layout of cleartrip.com. The price you see when you
make the selection of flights is the amount that you are debited
for. Also, when they say that they won't contact you, they don't. I
still get mail from makemytrip for one booking I made 6 months ago.

With the exception of the newly launched IndiGO and GO air, I have
flown on every other carrier multiple times and I find myself when I
have a choice choosing between Jet and King Fisher. While Jet has more
flights and street credibility, I think KingFisher is shaping up very
nicely - better planes and equally good service.

As far as individual experiences go, the airline doesn't seem to
matter that much. I've had excellent flights on Air Deccan and rather
bad ones on Jet.

If I am price conscious about a trip I usually choose the cheapest on
cleartrip.com - they don't seem to have an extra fee for booking.
OTOH, Air Deccan likes to experiment with its website rather often,
and breaks the cost comparison websites.

Apart from these travel sites ,one could also check out individual
airline websites; for example, Travelguru doesn't give Spicejet or
Paramount listings at all, whenever I have tried it.

I have travelled several times by Spicejet and my experience has been
good so far, a fair amount cheaper than Jet but still reliable. Would
like to get others' feedback on Spicejet

But I do agree that Jet is probably the best airline in the Indian
skies today

It is not that bad. If you book well in advance, then you get
dirt-cheap fares on Jet (in various classes like V, H and so on...
with the usual restrictions of no cancellation/modification etc.).
Even otherwise, I find fares on Jet & other airlines comparable in the
sector I travel the most, MAA-HYD. I think it is pricey only when you
are booking a day or two in advance.

Other options to try are Sahara & Kingfisher, if you are completely
against Deccan :) I have heard Paramount is reasonably OK for S.
Indian destinations.

For fare comparisons, you should look at makemytrip.com or yatra.com.

Lastly, try to avoid the "special" USD fares all airlines seem to have
for non-Indian credit cards.

Personally speaking, I find the little extra fare that Jet charges
usually pays for itself in terms of hassle-free travelling.

Jet is not budget.

That's the old and popularly known name. Don't go looking for it, 'cos the
restaurant sports a different name, one I cannot recall right now. Good
idea to reach Malleswaram Club / Grounds and look for a oldish looking
restaurant in a corner on other side of Margosa Road. Of course, easier to
just ask someone around there.
