[silk] EUtube: "let's come together"
this [1] is a pr effort from the european commission. the most popular video is a collection of clips on sex [2] from EU-supported film, with the climactic ending: "Let's come together" (which EU-nerds will recognise as the slogan of the EU's 50th anniversary [3]). who says bureaucrats don't have a sense of humour? the EC even has a little quiz [4] on the film clips. -rishab 1. http://www.youtube.com/user/eutube 2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koRlFnBlDH0 3. http://europa.eu/50/index_en.htm 4. http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/media/overview/clips/index_en.htm
Re: [silk] Douglas Adams
Does anyone know why a book by Douglas Adams is called "The salmon of doubt"? That is a takeoff on the Irish myth of the Salmon of Knowledge. http://www.allaboutirish.com/library/tales/demne.shtm Considering this is my first post on this list, I guess some sort of introduction would be in order - but sorry, I'm terrible at 'em. [silk] china to beat india in outsourcing?
what i found interesting in this article [1] was one of the comments which pointed out that several chinese universities are in the top ranks of the international college programming competition but india only has one IIT at rank 44 [2] anyway, it's true that IT is far bigger in china than india, if you include manufacturing and the domestic software industry (i.e., not outsourcing). -rishab 1. http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/blog/asiatech/archives/2007/07/idc_says_china.html 2. http://icpc.baylor.edu/past/icpc2007/Finals/Results-2007/standings-2007.htm

[silk] Douglas Adams
Does anyone know why a book by Douglas Adams is called "The salmon of doubt"? I feel rather stupid, but I haven't been able to understand the meaning. Irony, I would guess... but about what? Cheers Giancarlo

Re: [silk] Looking for some material on Linux
access media international published something called the "anatomy of linux opportunity, india" for 2004-2005, with size, tco, usage, perceptions. i can't find it online any more (and was only able to get hold of the toc a year ago). if anyone gets hold of more info please send me a copy. -rishab On Thu, 2007-06-28 at 17:26 +0530, Venkatesh Hariharan wrote: > I have a blog on Linux and open standards at www.osindia.blogspot.com. Re: [silk] IPhone - Thoughts?
Unlocking an iphone doesn't get you the whole package iirc. There are features such as visual voice mail that require special iphone support on the telco side. Have your friends in India thought that one out? Also, are they willing to pay the contract early termination fee that must be at least another 200 bucks? We were at a local apple store at around 6 pm on the launch day and here is what we saw - http://vsharma.net/downloads/iphone_launch_wash_sq_mall_oregon.3gp These people had been in the line since 6am. Fifteen minutes later, we could just walk in the store and grab one. The AT&T tie-down is definitely a restricting factor but as it is with every popular product with "restrictions", options to circumvent those will be available soon - http://iphoneunlocking.com/ http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2007/07/01/iphone-unlocked-accidently/ And I already have multiple friends in India pestering me to get them a piece through "some channel" so that they can start enjoying the social benefits of a $600 brick. I said, how will you unlock it? They said, that we will figure out. Everything is possible in India. Heh. Usage wise, the device is beautiful to Apple's standards. Apple has set a new standard with the combination of components they chose for the device. Some details - http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2007/07/01/igot-an-iphone-initial- impressions-and-reflections-part-3/ Competition is trying hard though and this is a good one from the carrier - http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/05/technology/circuits/05pogue.html? em&ex=1183780800&en=9b1df670af399cec&ei=5087%0A This service would fit perfectly with an iPhone. But *sigh* it dosen't. > I am one of those who turned in a > Blackberry for a far more useful Sony Ericsson P990i. Same here. I got a (freakin unstable) Treo 680 when it launched and I wish I had not spent the money on it. I still love my Nokia E50. Does gps, basic pda and phone calls. Has a better hands free speaker than any other device I have used. I love it. > More likely this > kind of article is coming from shills trying to undermine the iPhone > even before it is launched (Rob Enderle is quoted in the article), but Gah! They try. Everyone wanted a piece of the publicity of the iPhone. I know people who said - "Gah! iPhone, too restricted. Can't write apps for it. Won't work." And now the same people are saying "I told you so. Web apps for mobile phones, the best idea in the world. I told you so." > what do you think of the iPhone? Love it but don't want it. At least not this version. -- VaibhaV Sharma http://vsharma.net
