[silk] Microsoft updates XP and Vista without notifying users

2007-10-01 Thread Venkat Mangudi
Apparently, even if auto updates are turned off, Windows Automatic
Updates pushes 9 updates to Vista and XP. Not very surprising, IMO, if
this is true. Can someone with the huge virus (a.k.a Windows) on their
system verify if this is true?

It is true enough.

These days (since my own government has declared intent to h4x0r my systems),
I don't tolerate proprietary software on absolutely vital systems.

In near future I will have to draft and follow a hardening and
operation policy, physical integrity including.

I'm throughly annoyed at my co-citizen units, who have voted these
morons into power.

Does this article have any truth in it? How many of us on Silk trust
what run of the mill media reported on 9/11?

While we are on this topic, I would like to know how many of us on
Silk trust what the run-of-the-mill media reports on UFOs.

Very interesting question. I must admit my first reaction on hearing
something intreesting is to toss it out to some friends (on silk and
elsewhere, too) to see what they think - a form of contextual peer review.

2007-10-01 Thread Biju Chacko

People often ask me to predict how long newspapers can survive in the
Internet age. Ten years ago I believed newspapers would last another
five years. Clearly I am not qualified to make this sort of
prediction. But being unqualified has never dampened my enthusiasm for
publicly embarrassing myself. I think it's time to take another run at
this prediction.

First, it must be noted that old technologies sometimes evolve to stay
relevant. For example, radio evolved from something the family listens
to in the living room to something that individuals (mostly) listen to
in the car. There's some chance that newspapers could evolve in a
totally unexpected way and thrive for a hundred years. Let me paint a
picture that seems most likely to me.

Didn't really work for me. This article seems to be along the lines
of Malcolm Gladwell's books -- a simple observation backed by a
catch-phrase (like "monkeysphere" here -- a catchier term for Dunbar's
number) and driven home by an immense number of almost identical
examples. I'd reduce the article to this -- "People outside your
social circle are a faceless mass. Be careful of people who might try
to take advantage of that."

Then again, maybe I am just irritated by people who coin new words
when there are perfectly functional alternatives available! :)

Venky.
