[silk] Super Size Me and The Future of food

2010-02-02 Thread Mayank Dhingra
Hi,

Happened to watch a couple documentaries on food titled Super Size Me:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1432315846377280008
and The Future of Food: http://www.thefutureoffood.com/ recently and thought
of sharing with the group.

If things mentioned in these and a few other documentaries like 'Food Inc'
are exactly as shown, the whole set up looks to be in grave danger.

Thanks,
Mayank Dhingra

Shiv,

Go for emergence first and then human zoo.

Re: [silk] Favourite books read in 2008

2009-01-14 Thread Mayank Dhingra
1) Emergence - Steven Johnson
Is about how various and sometimes complex patterns evolve out of seemingly
simple things/beings. The book delves into how ants operate and how their
colonies get sophisticated over time, with proper planning for space(for ex:
their colonies have graveyards and dust bin at opposite corners) and work
distribution etc. I also liked the bit about how cities evolve, their
planning etc and self improving software. How various things and beings use
feedback to improve themselves.
All in all a very interesting read.

2) The Human Zoo - Desmond Morris
Its a zoologist's take on anthropology themed around the basic fact that
humans have culturally advanced really fast but biologically(and in most
other senses) they haven't advanced that much, in the sense that we are not
well programmed to fit the city needs, pressures and problems. He refers to
a city as human zoo not a concrete jungle as our behaviour and problems
resemble more to animals kept in over crowded zoos.

While I am here, I'll write about other books too

3) Made to stick - Chip Heath
Its a great book about what makes certain ideas and messages stick while
others get forgotten. It delves into what makes proverbs, urban legends
cross the boundaries of countries and spread across various languages and
cultures. According to the author for an idea/message to stick it has to
be(and involve)
*S - Simple, U - Unexpected, C- Concrete, C-Credible, E-Emotional, S-Story

4) talk to the SNAIL - Stephen Clarke
A light and funny(mocking too) take on the french.

5) Founders at work - Jessica Livingston
Series of about 42 interviews with founders/co-founders of web startups
including guys behind hotmail, gmail, firefox, hot or not and more

6)Anatomy of buzz - Emanuel Rosen ( currently reading)
Is based on "Word of Mouth". What it is , how it works and how it can be
leveraged..Really Interesting

Hope it helps :)

Re: [silk] Any Desmond Morris fans/critics here ?

2008-12-28 Thread Mayank Dhingra
I like the observations he quotes and way he builds up the case on how they
evolved from our basic animal/primate instincts.Things like "super-status "
and "stimulus struggle" are quite true and relevant today and I felt a bit
more self-aware. I don't agree with everything said in his books but for
sure they are interesting and make you think(at least it made me) about
things which generally you take for granted. I also, remember watching a
bbc series titled "The Human Sexes" which he hosted a couple of years back
and liked it.

I haven't read "Konrad Lorenz", will try to give it a read. I downloaded an
audio book of snow crash but never to listen to it either. I am
contemplating buying his book "Peoplewatching <%20http://tr.im/2p8b>" on
Body Language, has anyone here read it ?

[silk] Any Desmond Morris fans/critics here ?

2008-12-22 Thread Mayank Dhingra
Hi Guys,

I am reading a book by "Desmond Morris" called "The Human Zoo" and am
finding it pretty intriguing.
The book talks about how our cities resemble a super crowded Human Zoo and
what does the status struggle and
other aspects of a city life affect its inhabitants and a lot more.

Was wondering if anyone here has read any of his works especially "The Human
Zoo" and "The Naked Ape" and if yes
how did they find it ?

Thanks,
Mayank
