CSargyria, laser treatment and a guarantee?
Hi Everybody, Over the last five years, I get occasional remarks, to the effect that my face is a dark gray, or bluish color. I’m recalling that within the last year, or so, there have been comments on the list, indicating reversal of this condition, through some sort of laser treatment. Can someone can tell me more about this, so that I know what to expect? I've written the list about this before, but now I'm actually in a position to do the treatment. I’m now working in East Africa, in Kenya, and I’ve recently located a dermatologist here, who does treatment with a laser. I’ve made an appointment with him, first in his undertaking a biopsy. He’s told me that thereafter, in the event that this does prove to be argyria, he’ll need to do three sessions of the treatment, over something like four to six weeks. I’m a little concerned, however, when he tells me that this treatment is not guaranteed to work. I suppose that I’m ready to accept this possibility, however, it occurs to me to ask whether anybody on the list can tell me a bit about what to expect? For example, how does the laser treatment work? I’d ask other questions, but I feel as if I’m in the dark. There’s also an issue, that when I look in the mirror, I don’t see the problem. I do know that it’s there, however, because people sometimes remark about this, out of the blue (Pun?). Otherwise, I do feel that to some extent, because I work with silver, my having argyria is an occupational hazard. As a ceramic designer, I’ve developed several types of pottery water filters, and we’ve been able to get five thousand of these into the shantytowns of Nairobi. There are many millions here, who are daily drinking pathogen contaminated water, and this is literally killing the small children, especially. I want to believe that within a few years, we can get clean water to everyone. Reid Harvey

Well, if working on the water filters is involved in some bluish tinge in some lights to some people but not yourself, I would wear it as an occasionally possibly visible badge of honour, I think! It's certainly not broken, but who knows what unguaranteed laser treatment might do to fix something that might sometimes show - a bit - or might not.
