The Southeast can grow a lumber tree in 35 years with 2 pulp harvests in
between. Mostly Loblolly yellow pine.
Oak grows just as fast as pine.
 Washington...about 55 to 80 years.
Minnisota90 to 150 years

Cut down a maple, poplar or gum and it's a shade tree again in 5-10
yearsya can't kill em.
Don't mow the grass for 2 years and you need a big bush hog.
Don't clean out the gutters every year and you get saplings growing in
there in no time.
A fig tree will grow almost a foot per month.

Hi, We lived in such a house made from bamboo blind while living in the Western Highlands of Papua, New Guinea in the 1950's. Actually we lived in three different such houses.  Certainly nothing was fumigated!  We did live one year in a frame house.  Do not recall that we had any fewer colds and such while in the frame house, or since then in houses in the U.S.A. Cheers! RuthS

How To Build Your Own Log Home For Less Than $15,000 Author Robert L.
Williams and his family built a 4,300 square foot house with no previous
carpentry experience. He shares his building strategies and techniques,
in 36 detailed chapters; you'll learn the essentials of chainsawing and
squaring logs, building foundations, constructing walls and rooftops,
installing floors, windows and doors, wiring and plumbing, and much
more. Williams' engaging, easy-to-follow text is accompanied by numerous
photographs and illustrations to guide you every step of the way. 216
pages, paperback. #4003...$20.00

(Doesn't say anything about hoisting though...)

Living smack in the middle of tree farming/logging country, I
estimated
that I could have bought enough logs, cut and delivered, to build this
small house for $3,000.

I just couldn't figure out how to handle the tonnage by myself.

Definitely. Disease is spread by contact with "other". I am immune to my own
germs and the germs of my loved ones and neighborhood.

Thanx for the reminder. I tend to think of Chinese shipping crates as "my
neighborhood" but I live in LA now and crates often carry more than parasites
and cargo. Human traffickers move people in them, often sick people. Someone
who sells a crate is not going to mention the stow away's with TB they found.

I have heard of bamboo blinds from china with termites in them, but that

days, but whether the crates themselves are also fumigated?

2005-11-13 Thread Sam L

Hi Dave.
What amazes me is that they can still make those crates cheaper than sending
them back. No wonder we have a trade deficit.
You might want to look at the way they build houses in Brasil. They use
brick, rebar and concrete. Now if you were to make you own bricks and mix your
own concrete you would have a house, not in a earthquake area though. They even
brick the inside walls. The inside walls are non supporting (similar to a
office building with a false ceiling). After the brick they will put a concrete
type of stucco on or tile it. Very easy to work with.

You may want to fumigate the Chinese shipping crates before using to get
rid of possible pests...

Also, check out "papercrete" and "padobe", "rammed earth" and "cob".
Lots of interesting ways to build a house, depending on where you want
to live, and some are very cheap but labor intensive.

Ode did I hear that you built your own house? Are you in the US?

My husband and I are thinking of moving at the first of the year and
rather than buying an existing house we are throwing around the idea of
building one out of used/retired Chinese shipping crates.

We need a pool because of his paralysis and I want to use ozone water
rather than chlorine.

The people on this list are Oh! so wise! any ideas and words of wisdom
for solar panels vs. wind generators, water purifiers, well water and
cisterns etc?

We also toyed with the idea of buying a retired ATT underground facility
or NIKE site but they are hard to find and are often prone to flooding
and government use restrictions. We may end up inheriting one. In this
case we will build a shipping crate house on top. Any input on house
buildin is appreciated.
