Charles, The only good reason (assuming it is actually more effective that low-voltage "gizmo" variety CS) is due to the high-voltage itself. For safety reasons you want to employ construction techniques that will isolate the user from inadvertant contact with the very dangerous voltages. You're correct though that from what I've seen of the devices, that the basic parts can be purchased new for several hundred dollars and used / surplus for considerably less. Due to my experience working around very high power levels, I would feel confident in constructing a device for my own personal use. With all the know how on this list concerning electrical manufacture, would it not be an easy thing to build an AC generator also? Could we not likewise bypass the high dollar AC units by building our own? Obviously it would cost more than building a DC unit, but the savings would likely be proportional to the expenditure.
