See what I mean by a slipping I.Q.? I never caught the mm, and
probably would have quoted the mm, instead of um. Then everyone
I know would've said, "See, I told you they were fringe nitwits,"
thus including all of you in my new non-proofing persona.
Thanks again, Bob.

I noticed the same thing, but I wasn't going to say anything.
I figured Susan was intending to say micrometers, or microns, so I
mentally corrected it and read on.

A good way to write micrometers would be to use "um". The "u" is
the closest thing in the standard ascii character set for the greek
lower case micron. So the ideal range of silver particle is something
like .001-.0015um, or 1 to 15 nanometers.

Oh well!

I think most everyone knew that it was a typo or a misunderstanding.
7MM is just a little smaller that the standard 7.62 NATO bullet.
Hardly compatable in the blood stream.

The size of things

1998-07-04 Thread Tai-Pan
Hi list,
Was scanning some postings and my eye caught on some numbers. My brain
likes numbers so my eyes are alert to them.
A posting was talking about blood and said that a red blood cell was
7 mm in size. Since a red blood cell is really 0.0077 mm in size ,was
wondering what the differance was. To make the comparision decided to
use a childs play block to represent 1 X 10-3. That means that it would
take 7700 (seven thousand and seven hundred) blocks to get up to
1 X 10 to 0 power. Now lets say that the childs block was 1.5 inch long
and it takes 7700 of them to get up to the equivalent of 1 X 10/0. Thats
7700 X 7 since we want 7mm (7700 blocks was for 1mm) or 53,900 blocks at
1.5" each or 80,850 inches. That is 80,850 / 12 or 6737.5 feet long.
Now a mile is 5280 feet so we have 6737 / 5280 or 1.2759 miles long.
So speaking in terms of size a red blood cell 0.0017 mm in size
,represented by the block, was misrepresented as being over 1 and 1/4
miles in size. The size of a silver particle in the same posting was
also misrepresented and would look like the Empire State building
compared to its real proportion. :-)

   Bless you Bob Lee
