Re: [Simh] [EXTERNAL] RE: Can't start VAX from SSH

2020-05-28 Thread Baker, Lawrence M
SIMH VAX exits immediately without reading the configuration file. That's the
part I hope can be fixed. If the SIMH VAX was built with SDL support, but the
configuration file is for a VAX without a graphics head, then I should think
the SDL failure should be irrelevant. If the configuration file does try to
connect to a graphics head, then that is when the SDL failure should matter,
causing the configuration to fail.

It looks like I will have to rebuild the current SIMH VAX without SDL support
for SDL failures to be ignored.

In your ssh session, I would think you could disable the QVSS device in your
VAX simulator configuration file and it would run VMS just fine. If that
doesn’t work (or if you never actually had the QVSS device enabled ), you could
uninstall whatever libsdl2-dev package you’ve got on your Mac and then rebuild
the VAX simulator and then run the rebuilt simulator.

I am working from home and can only SSH in to my desktop Mac at work. Our
unhelpful IT department automatically patches and reboots our system, which
must have happened last night. That terminated the SIMH VAX I left running.
Normally, I leave my desktop logged in. Until today, I have had no trouble
starting my SIMH VAX remotely.

Today, no one is logged in to my desktop. When I SSH remotely and try to start
my SIMH VAX, it fails immediately with the error message:

$ ./vax-20200419

_RegisterApplication(), FAILED TO establish the default connection to the
WindowServer, _CGSDefaultConnection() is NULL.

SDL Video subsystem can't initialize

Is there any way around this short of driving to work and logging in to my
desktop?

I don't think the SDL library is the problem. I think there must be some
requirement in SDL that the display has someone logged in. Maybe because there
is no window manager that can be opened until an authorized login has taken
place. I.e., a privilege violation.

My SIMH VAX has no need for a graphics head. But, it seems the SDl failure
kills the VAX before it gets to the configuration and run command. I think an
SDI failure might disable a VAX graphics head, but it should not stop a VAX
without a graphics head from running.

I was hoping there was a command-line switch that would override this.

I think my last resort might be to rebuild SIMH VAX without graphics support
and try to run that. That would save me an hour's drive each way to work and
back.

The SDL video subsystem error makes me think that they put in a patch that your
current version of LibSDL has a problem with, or have applied some protection
to prevent LibSDL from attaching to the Mac graphics console. You might want to
check to see if there is a newer and more compatible version of LibSDL for your
patched system version.

Or obviously, turn off the VAX QVSS/QDSS component that requires the LibSDL
library and start the VAX without the graphics head. :-(

[Simh] Attaching DELUA device

2020-05-28 Thread Phil J FIsher
Hello SimH people

I have an issue getting a DELUA device correctly attached when running under
VirtualBox on a CentOS 6 guest.
I have sort of got it to attach by using 'attach XU0 nat:'. But when I boot
RSX11M+ 4.6 it does not seem to be picked up.
And the attach info seems odd (lost the text at the moment will add the info
if anyone has ideas).

I had to install Npcap on my W10 host if that affects anything.

Any pointers to information that I could not find or hints very welcome.

Thanks
Phil
