[Simh] RSTS/E v7 - how to mount disk

2017-04-22 Thread Mike Markowski
Many thanks, if he is on this list, to whoever wrote the RSTS/E v7
installation directions. I installed and built the system successfully
thanks to the included directions but am having no luck mounting SYSL1G
so that I can install the 'help' and other packages. A session showing
my failed attempt is below.

Some short background, I'm brand new, just days old, to simh and am
enjoying reading about it and learning how to use it. As a 15 year old
in 1978 the first computer I ever used was a PDP11/70 running RSTS/E.
After discovering simh I had to try getting this OS up and running. Not
surprisingly, after nearly 40 years the commands aren't springing to
mind and I can't many v7 docs on the web. Many thanks for any advice!

Re: [Simh] RSTS/E v7 - how to mount disk

2017-04-22 Thread Mike Markowski
I didn't realize that's what my commands are doing... I'm reading
instructions included in the tar file:

   http://simh.trailing-edge.com/kits/rstsv7gen.tar.Z

However, by the end of the instructions it is assumed you are
knowledgeable enough to mount a disk image: "To install a package use
the $BUILD program. For example, if SYSL1G is mounted on DL2: ..."
This assumption does not apply to me at this stage! I simply mimicked
the earlier method of mounting what would become the system disk. From
your comment I realize this isn't the thing to do.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: [Simh] RSTS/E v7 - how to mount disk

2017-04-23 Thread Mike Markowski
Problem solved. I wasn't making the distinction between simulator and
OS, and overlooked actually mounting it within rsts/e! That is,

   mount dl2:sysl1g

As Paul said, no need for the DSK option. Amazing what a cup of coffee
and new day can do.

Thanks,
Mike Markowski

Hi Galen,

Not sure if this is already uploaded by you or not, but I found this:

Thanks,

I couldn’t find this manual on Bitsavers. Does anyone know if it has
been archived elsewhere?

If it isn’t readily available I’d be happy to submit it for archival.
Just let me know how.

I am looking to put up a PDP-# machine to play with. What machine and OS
should I use. I am looking for simple/beginner system, or as beginner it got.

I think I would start with a PDP-8. NO telnet terminal. Simple OS, lots of
software and support. If you want blinken lights try one of these:-

http://obsolescence.wixsite.com/obsolescence/pidp-8-get-one

its SIMH with a nice panel

Also, not *nix, it is still alive and therefore boring.
Telnet terminals would be awesome but not necessary.

Here some step by step pics of mine as I built it that will give you an
idea of the effort involved. If you've ever built a kit, you'll find
this is a piece of cake and a fantastic retro front end for your R-Pi!

As I expect you know,RSTS was “born” on 11^th June 1970 as shown when
you enter DATE$(1%) with Star Date format selected.

I am planning on celebrating this milestone by gathering a total of 50
stories from people who worked with RSTS/E at some stage in their
lives.  I will collate these stories and send you a copy when finished.
