DECwindows will expect the LCG to be present on the /VLC, but it's not
implemented yet. You might be able to set WINDOW_SYSTEM to 0 to get
around this problem:

>>> B /R5:1 DKAxxx

SYSBOOT> SET WINDOW_SYSTEM 0

SYSBOOT> C

This should prevent DECwindows graphics drivers from being loaded at
system startup. Also update SYS$SYSTEM:MODPARAMS.DAT to reflect this
change in case you run AUTOGEN.

Hello Mark.

There are a whole host of "unknowns" with the newly released VAXstation
graphics - I believe
they're not fully implemented yet on all the various models (maybe Matt
Burke can confirm this).

As you found out, the minimum supported VAX/VMS version for the
VAXstation4000/VLC is
VAX/VMS V5.5-2H4. There are also a number of system updates for this
version (including
a couple of mandatory ones and the Y2K updates). If you don't already have
access to these,
I can provide some that I grabbed prior to patch access being withdrawn by
HP. Reply to me
privately.

Also the same goes for OpenVMS VAX V7.3. If you have updates, I'd try
installing these too
(same offer - I can provide the updates I have if you need them).

Perhaps you should report any subsequent failures via the GitHub issues at
  https://github.com/simh/simh

The reason Motif crashed is that the VLC doesn't yet have graphics
capability.

Final try for this evening - I installed VAX/VMS 7.3 which went fine. I then
installed DW Motif 125 with license. I get a crash on DW Motif startup. I
tried this with Matt's build of /VLC, and then my build, and then the latest

Just an update - I tried the 7.3 VAX/VMS CD and it did boot OK.

I'll try and find some alternative versions of 5.5 - I know there was a
hardware release to support the /60 and /90, maybe I'm not using the right
CD here.

Probably one for Matt, but I'm sure the answer will be useful across the
list.

I am trying to get the vax48.exe VAXstation 4000/VLC windows executable
supplied by Matt to boot a VAX/VMS 5.5.2 image, and have experienced a
crash. Looking for help.

Subject: RE: VAXstation 4000/VLC Boot Failure

Just an update - I tried the 7.3 VAX/VMS CD and it did boot OK.

I'll try and find some alternative versions of 5.5 - I know there was a
hardware release to support the /60 and /90, maybe I'm not using the right
CD here.

Regards, Mark.

I've attached my simh.ini file and the simulator trace output below:
