If it also has 100rel then it establishes an early dialog. Is it really required to send 183 after invite r we can directly send 180 ringing ? In which all condition we have to send 183 If you want to send 180 to indicate that you are alerting then there is no reason to also send 183. Just as with 183, the 180 may be sent with or without SDP. Note that the decision about whether to play early media at the UAC is not determined by the reception of a 183. Rather it is governed by the reception of media at the port in your offer, and can in principle occur even without receiving a 18x of any sort. However some implementations refuse to play early media until they receive an answer with an IP and port that they use to verify the sender of the media. If you are doing such validation, then it shouldn't matter what sort of 18x it is. With different To-Tags there are lots of use cases: [UC1] Multiple "stacked" proxies / gateways: UACGW1 PSTN-GW | | | |- INVITE->| | |< - 100 - |- INVITE->| | |< - 100 - | |< - 180 - | | | |< - 183 - | |< - 183 - | | [UC2] Parallel forking: UAC1 GW1 UAC2 UAC3 | | | | |- INVITE->| | | |< - 100 - |- INVITE->| | | |- - - - INVITE - - >| | |< - 100 - | | | | |< - 100 -| | |< - 180 - | | |< - 180 - | | | | | |< - 183 -| | |< - 183 - | | |< - 183 - | | | Therefore it could also happen that SDP in 200 OK differs from SDP in 183. And you could get multiple different 183 replies. And 180 AFTER 183. Even with the very same To-Tag there are reasons for doing so: [UC3]: Consider a call to a B2BUA. It sends 180, UAC starts playing RBT. B2BUA makes part of a large application, does some database lookup, discovers who you are - and sends out 183 "We are so sorry..." [UC4]: UAC with integrated Voicemail. It starts sending one or more 180 replies, after a timeout the 183 announcement starts "The number you have dialed..." Re: [Sip-implementors] 183 Session Progress after 180Ringing(withSame To Tag)
And about the use case of '183 Session Progress after 180 Ringing'; In our B2BUA, we provide the kind of feature where if actual callee does not answers the call (callee has been sent 180 Ringing), caller goes to IVR (for this B2BUA sends 183 Session Progress to caller). By having this, caller can dial the desired number to reach specific extension. However, 180 Ringing is sent as soon as call has been placed to called party and called party is ringing. ITSP does not disconnect the media after sending 180 Ringing instead start playing Ring Back Tone (RBT) to caller. Hence, in either manner while caller disconnects the media or not on receipt of 180 Ringing (without SDP), RBT will be played to caller either locally (if caller honors 180 Ringing) or by remote server (if caller does not honors 180 Ringing). I believe in having a check in application to check whether any RTP stream is still there or not after receiving 180 Ringing (without SDP). If no RTP is coming, then only 180 Ringing should be honored to play RBT locally else RTP from ITSP should be played".
