ok, last night was the 1st birthday celebration
for Birdland, Halifax's alternaclub-of-sorts.
i've just got time for a quick review of the music:
PIGGY you may not have heard of yet: they're a
wonky calypso band and last night they were in
6-person-lineup mode: acoustic guitar/vocal,
violin, standup bass, clarinet, sax, drums.
they were showing filmstrips on the wall next
to the stage, apparently produced by member(s)
of the band(?). i liked the animated pig with
the "go piggy" logo. :-) the band were cool
too. :-)
CRAPPO 2 was, for this night, laura borealis,
rebecca K, matt kelly, ian mcgettigan, rob benvie.
the band started off with rebecca's 4 songs and
then she left the stage. laura was wearing
studded leather jeans and a big blond wig! and
matt was wearing his leather jacket and smoking.
i was laughing out loud. laura's songs, arranged
to accomodate the skills/tastes of ian and rob,
begin to sound like tim robbins experience material.
matt was doing really tasty stuff on guitar. i like.
STINKIN RICH had a bunch of people up on stage
with him, and he stood side-on facing them.
they acted like, um, fans at a hip-hop show. :-)
i guess rich has learned the cardinal rule of
birdland -- if you want an enthusiastic audience,
bring your own. :-) let's see, who was up there...
i saw mr. brendan ryan, chek luv shakil, and would
you believe that gordski was up on stage? incredible,
huh? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA. excuse me. :-)
oh yeah, stinkin rich is the dope mc. did i mention that?
GRACE BABIES went on next. i didn't see them, though,
'cause mike and jim and i went out for a slice of pizza.
we went to king of donair on quinpool road. you know,
i went to sicilian while they had that $0.99 slice special
on, but their slices are smaller, and they didn't make them
any bigger when they went back to the $2 slices. so we
said, forget it, we're goin' to KOD. so we did. and boy,
did they give me a big slice. it was so good. yum yum.
but there were a lot of people there. we almost didn't
get a seat. mike had a sprite and jim and i each had
a pepsi. we all had pepperoni slices. well, they don't
really serve any other kind. anyway, that really hit
the spot. :-)
COYOTE came on last and totally went off. as far as
energy level went, it's one of the best coyote gigs i've
ever seen. the newer songs like "room so blue" have
improved so much... i want to know what the name of
that last song was -- it was *so* wicked! chris is
really at the point now where he can be just as vocally
over-the-top with a guitar in his hands as he is without
one. it would be really cool if he had four arms, though,
so he could do that grab-the-mic-and-almost-swallow-it
thing. :-) unfortunately, after five bands, it was
2:50 when they finished their set and even with people
clapping and yelling for an encore the DJ killed it by
cutting in with -- presidents of the united states of
america. how gauche.
