Hmm, I don't know how cfdisk works very accurately, but I'm assuming you
have a Primary partition, then some Free Space, then an Extended partition
which contains 3 Logical partitions (your Linux partitions), and then free
space outside the Logical partition.

I'd recommend finding somebody with Partition Magic. I use the second
latest version, not the Windows GUI 'oh great' version, the DOS GUI
version.

This will allow you to 'move' the Extended partition to the end of the
drive, which will in turn move all the Free Space together.

And your e-mail address is buggered, please fix :)

Andrew.

[SLUG] Finding out the library versions

2000-09-01 Thread Subba Rao

Hi,

I am trying to upgrade some libraries and would like to find out what version
is installed on my system. I have tried the "strings" command but am getting
more confusing version numbers for each file. The "ldd" and "ldconfig" command
did not help that much. How do I find out what version of library is on my
system?

Thanks for any help.

[SLUG] problem w/ partitions

2000-09-01 Thread Alex Salmon

hi

firstly thanks for all the ppl who gave tips on backup methods i am
currently trialing a few.. (i actually managed to build rsync from the
source for win which is pretty cool)

anyway

I wanted to reduce my win partition from 6.5 gb to 3. so i did scandisk
and defrag and split it with fips no problems reported. I then deleted the
partition i had just created.

the funney thing is and i am not sure if it should work or not

if i try to make a new partition of all free space i cant get 8 gb as i
would expect. or cant i join paritions that arnt next to each other.??

If so how do i mearge the 2 lots of free space together.

the other thing is why does fdisk say tha /dev/hda2 exists and cfdisk says
it dosent. what exactly is an extended partition again and why dosent
cfdisk see it as extended.

Partition Table for /dev/hda from fdisk

   Device BootStart EndBlocks Id System
   /dev/hda1 * 1 454 3432208+ c Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
   /dev/hda2 889 1671 59194805 Extended
   /dev/hda5 889 908151168+ 83 Linux
   /dev/hda6 1658 1671105808+ 82 Linux swap
   /dev/hda7 909 1657 5662408+ 83 Linux

partition table of /dev/hda from cfdisk

 Name FlagsPart Type FS Type
[Label]Size (MB)

-
 hda1 Boot PrimaryWin95 FAT32 (LBA)
   3514.62
 Pri/LogFree Space
   3359.79
 hda5LogicalLinux ext2
154.83
 hda7LogicalLinux ext2
   5798.34
 hda6LogicalLinux swap
108.39
 Pri/LogFree Space
   5101.61

This is what it should be and seems to be when running the system.

hda1 is winbloze
hda5 is /boot
hda7 is /
hda6 is swap
and about 8gb of spare space.

thanks all

ghoti

[SLUG] Fix to: Help - Disaster Struck

2000-09-01 Thread Steven Kerr

Thanks for those who responded.

The fix was a bit of patience and Reading TFM

e2fsck -b 16385 -c /dev/hdd1

The -c did a bad block check, in frustration I left the system
overnight as it appeared just to hang... no disk activity for about 10
minutes.

This morning it had finished (well dropped back to shell anyway), and
now the fs is mountable.

All fsck'ing now works ok with no block being reported as bad
(probably -c may have repaired them)

I was able to get the critical configuration files off the disk. The
physical disk is now destined for the scrap heap as I ain't going to
chance it in a live enviroment.

Regards

1) What does your script look like?
2) What does /etc/ppp/chap-secrets look like?
3) Chat does /etc/ppp/options look like?

Can't do much diagnosis on what you've given here. Feel free to remove

Not necessarily - and ONLY if the vendor requests it.

All NCR products run NCR Unix - which, while BASED on SCO, has had major
in-house changes made - unless otherwise requested.

[SLUG] A super sparc?

2000-09-01 Thread Marty Richards

Hi Slug,

I have acquired a couple of new workstations. The problem is I'm not really
sure what the boxes are...

The cases are labelled "Axil 311" and they appear to have 6 CPU's ??
labelled "Super Sparc TMS390".

Unfortunately there is no RAM, and the slots seem to need 100 pin ? memory
which I've never seen ;(

So, can anyone identify these boxes? Does anyone know where I can source
some RAM for them? SMP linux is appealing ;)

Cheers,
Marty

At one stage they did, but PHB in the banks decided that IBM had
killed OS/2 and started to move them over to NT. There have been a
couple of rollouts of NT ATMs in Sydney I believe.
