Well, I used to run X on a 386SX/20 with 5MB of memory. Compiling the kernel
took around 24 hours IIRC.

Oldest would have to be SparcStation SLC w/ 16MBs of RAM... but
progsoc can beat me on that one with their SparcServer 4/330. [We
also had one when I was working at the ANU, but I installed NetBSD on
it instead :)]

at one stage i was swapping onto a floppy in order to run a 486/SX
diskless X terminal.

the speed is bearable, until two processes start to swap
simultaneously. the seek time on a floppy is horrendous.

i considered raiding two floppy drives, but i realised that PC
hardware doesn't seem to be able to access both at the same time
anyway.

(once everything was running remotely with XDMCP, it was very useable
tho ;)

A Commodore (that's right!) 386-SX16 with 8MB. It took 10 minutes
to boot and I used it as a dialup box for 3 months until I got
my first 486 ;)

I managed to get RAM for our multia early so i reckon that was a complete
bitch not knowing a single thing about alpha hardware.
once everyone else came online and some more info came on line it wasn't too
hard but for ages we just stumbled in the dark trying to the the damn thing
booted.

I'm not sure if it counts, but I have an LRP setup for a 386SX/20. Naturally
no hard disk and only 4M of RAM which has 2 nic's in it to be a mini router
for my cable connection (it did work once before).

Can't get much slower than that unless someone wants to try a full blown
install on a box like that! :)

[SLUG] Hardware - Antiques

2001-06-09 Thread Jon Biddell

Must be the prospect of all that gardening and cleaning up if the "computer
museum" (i.e. the garage) SWMBO has mandated during the next 23 days of
annual leave (bugger !!), but I'm bored,..

So I thought I'd start a Linux Hardware discussion topic;

Q. What is the oldest / wierdest / most cantankerous piece of hardware that
you've ever had Linux running on ?

For me, it's the Toshiba Libretto 110CT - the 800 x 480 screen was an
absolute bugger to get right under X.

Yes works fine. I used to do this when I had a Telstra ADSL
connection and the Telstra<->Optus gateway really sucked. I used to dial
into PI with the standard modem and route some IP's down there so I
could actually get some work done. Can't remember what speeds I used to
get. Definetly got 33.6 but there isn;t really any reaon why you
shouldn;t be able to get 56k or whatever you normally get.

[SLUG] ADSL and simultaneous PSTN modem

Has anyone any experience of using ADSL and PSTN modem simultaneously over
the same copper pair. Theoretically it should work, but does it?
