[SLUG] Redhat 7.2 sendmail

2001-12-19 Thread Alan L Tyree

Help, please,

I just make the (perhaps serious) mistake of upgrading a Redhat 7
installation to 7.2.

I know that the default sendmail configuration is funny, so changed it
according to stuff in the archives.

Still no joy popping mail from my servers - I get this message:

fetchmail: SMTP> MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
fetchmail: SMTP< 550 5.0.0 Access denied
fetchmail: SMTP> RSET
fetchmail: SMTP< 250 2.0.0 Reset state
 flushed
fetchmail: POP3> DELE 2
-

This happens with every message on the server. I get no local
delivery. The maillog shows:

Dec 20 17:13:15 sage sendmail[3194]: fBK6DFo03194: tcpwrappers (localhost, 127.0.0.1)
rejection
Dec 20 17:13:17 sage sendmail[3194]: NOQUEUE: localhost [127.0.0.1] did not issue
MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA

for each message that is trashed.

HELP, PLEASE!
Alan

[SLUG] problem installing linux on ye olde HD

2001-12-19 Thread Mark Gandrabur

Hi. I am trying to install RedHat 7.1 linux on a Pentium 75 with a conner
CFS425A HD. Unfortunately the installer tells me that "no valid block
devices found". I was going to give up and assume it just couldnt be
supported but poking around the internet it seems that others are usng it
without problems. I also get a message saying " unknown EDD 0x200
supported".
I have tried specifying the HD geometry on installation but this doesnt
seem to help either. The drive works fine with windows so its not a fault
with the drive itself.
Any pointers would be great. thanks.

The smallest things I've used are HP e-PC's or IBM NetVistas.

Both come with around 128MB RAM, Celeron or PIII ~20GB HDD, 2 x USB,
CDROM.

With the HP's, a USB floppy is extra. IBM's is built in.

Yes Thanks Alen, I didn't have that on my system but a quick apt-get
got it. Now I have to still work out why that will work but normal lpr
wont' It's certainly something to do with access permissions.

Thanks Ken too. I will setup my hosts files like you have and see what
happens there.

I will leave you all with a funny from a google translation.
I entered "Your host does not have line printer access" and hit `translate'
from German for the 1st hit.

Symptom: They try to print out something over a print server
(a printer at a distant computer); it fails with the message:
lpd: Your host of does emergency have LINE printer ACCESS.

A cause: The message says it: Their local computer may not do over the distant

Solution: De-energise the local computer on the print server, by them on the print
server your local computer into the file /etc/hosts.equiv.

Right Scotty, start local computer de-energising now :-)

[SLUG] getmail + sendmail

2001-12-19 Thread Edwin Humphries

I'm configuring getmail on the server to check our various external mailboxes and
consolidate them locally into mail
accounts on the server. I run sendmail as a local SMTP server and to prevent local
emails from going out to the net for
delivery, and was anticipating that getmail would post mail to the sendmail mailboxes.

However, the getmail documentation (such as it is) says it does not need to use an
MTA, but suggests that if you want to,
use qmail. It supports three types of mailboxes: mbox files, qmail Maildirs or piped
to a command (but not as root).

The questions are:

1. If I don't use an MTA, how would I configure the WinNT email clients (Pegasus 4)?

2. Can I use sendmail as the MTA? If so, how do I configure the getmail output?

3. What's an mbox?

4. The piped to command seems a bit risky, according to the documentation: is it a
good option to send the mail to
sendmail? How would this work - would sendmail know which mailbox it should go to?

IIRC, 2.4 kernels have a traffic shaper, which can limit bandwidth based on
source or destination port...

Haven't used it through, so it might be deep magic.

Redhat 7.2 *does* include iptables in the default kernel. However,
their /etc/init.d/iptables script first checks to see if ipchains is
running by looking for the ipchains module in lsmod. Redhat is probably
using ipchains, even though you selected no firewall. Try "rpm -e
ipchains" or otherwise stop /etc/init.d/ipchains from running at bootup.

To test this theory without modifying your system, try

  service stop ipchains
rmmod ipchains# There *might* be other modules using
# this, if so remove those too.
  service start iptables

I *think* that should be sufficient. If it works, the "service start
iptables" will show an "[ OK ]" line, otherwise it'll do nothing and
give no output.

Thanks. I'll check that out. It's just that the grub.conf mentions it, so I
figured I could need to have one.

Thanks!

By the way, George Vieira gave me a couple of pointers. It turns out I
already have iptables installed. The problem was that the firewall script
was looking explicitly for "v1.2" when RH 7.2 has version 1.2.3, so a quick
mod to their script to sed out anything after "v1.2" should keep me going for
a few minor version changes :-).

I do still have some issues because some of the lines of the script are
generating errors saying something like "TOS not supported", so I have to
track that down, but George has suggested to upgrade to whatever the lates
iptables is, so I might just try that before worrying about it too much.

Cheers,

Harry O.

No, this isn't a problem. Each kernel you install stores it's modules in
/lib/modules/2.x.y, x.y being the specific kernel version. Unless you
install/recompile the same version of the kernel a number of times, the
old modules will stay untouched.

[SLUG] Building new kernel

2001-12-19 Thread Harry Ohlsen

I installed Redhat 7.2 yesterday. Because I felt my system needed a little
rejuvenation, I decided to do a fresh install.

I tried to make sure I had a backup of all my important files and, generally,
I think that went OK and I now have many gigabytes of free space that was
previously taken up by things I'd installed and never used.

Anyway, to my question ...

I decided to choose for the install not to set up a firewall, because I had
an iptables script that I'm happy with and was planning on using that.

However, it would appear that iptables support isn't included in the kernel
that was installed by RH 7.2 (2.4.7). That may simply be because I asked for
no firewall, but I don't know. If that's the case, I think it's kind of poor
that they would leave out such support, given that one might easily decide to
add firewalling later, but I guess that's a design decision on their part.

Anywa, I tried booting the 2.4.13 image I had been using previously, but hit
a problems because it didn't support ext3, which I'd chosen when I installed
the RH 7.2 system ... that was another reason I decided to go with a new
install.

So, I've downloaded 2.4.16 and am currently building that, after having made
sure it's including modules for both ext3 and iptables.

Once I finish the "make modules", I'm going to have to do a "make install
modules" ... I believe? What I'm worried about is whether if the new kernel
fails, I'll end up not being able to boot the 2.4.7 kernel that came with RH
7.2, since I assume the "make install modules" will scribble over its modules.

Do I need to worry about that, or do modules get installed somewhere based on
the kernel you've built?

Also, RH 7.2 uses GRUB and it refers to an initrd file that has a kernel
version number in it. How do I make an equivalent for my new kernel ... or
can I safely use the one that the 2.4.7 kernel is using?

Any other issues I should worry about?

If someone can point me to a URL where I can find a detailed explanation of
these sorts of things, that would be great.

TIA

what about doing some kind of "traffic shaping or QoS" (says he without
ever having tried it!) based on say all ssh/telnet traffic has

There is a hardware solution - it's called a Packet Shaper. Basically, it
allows you to assign a priority to in/out packets of certain types, so you
could assign a lower priority to, for example, http packets...

Not cheap, though.

I have heard that there is a software-only version of something similar,
but don't have any details on it. However, google might.

The followup suggested adding the machine to hosts.lpd but Ken already
had that machine added like me. Ummm ?

[SLUG] Trying to setup remote printing between two Linux boxen.

2001-12-19 Thread Michael Lake

Hi all,

I have just installed a Lexmark T520 printer on a SUSE box and it prints
fine. I am just trying to get printing now from a remote machine, my
Debian box (Potatoe). It seems that the printer job can't get access
to the lpd on the remote machine.

local machine: remote machine:
martel --ethernet--->tazieff + printer
(Debian potatoe) (SUSE 7.3)

If I cat the file to lpr -Plex1200 or print from GhostView the job ends
up in the local printer queue onmartel but never gets to tazieff.

martel:/etc# ls -l /var/spool/lpd/lexmark/
total 148
-rw-rw1 lp lp115 Dec 19 19:31 cfA007martel
-rw-rw1 mikellp 147063 Dec 19 19:31 dfA007martel
--wxr--rw-1 root lp 5 Dec 19 17:28 lock
-rw-rw-r--1 root lp 18 Dec 19 18:15 status

martel:# lpq -Plex1200
martel: Warning: lex1200 is down: printing disabled
martel: Warning: no daemon present
Rank Owner Job Files Total Size
1stmikel 7/tmp/gv_3c205054_1_out.ps.tmp 147063 bytes
tazieff: /usr/sbin/lpd: lex1200: Your host does not have line printer access

So it seems that martel can't forward the job to the remote machine tazieff.
Oh lpd is running on both machines. It is not started from inetd.
I am using standard lpr on Debian.

This is what I setup in /etc/printcap
# REMOTE Lexmark T520 - this entry added manually by Mike Lake
lex1200:\
 :rm=tazieff:\
 :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lexmark:\
 :rp=lex1200:\
 :sh:

I have on tazieff, the remote machine with the printer, hosts.lpd with
martel mentioned in it. Thus martet should be allowed.

There are no error messages in /var/log/messages on either tazieff or martel.
Just in case its tcp wrappers I have put lpd: 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
into hosts.allow on tazieff.

I have read the printing HOWTO but its does not mention anything about
problems like the above for network printing.
What else can I use to debug what is happening here?

Mike
