I have just received an email from PC Authority that contains the
top ten vulnerabilities within windows and *nix.
The list ranked IIS number one problem for security and for number 3
Apache web server. Besides SSL issues what security issues came from
Apache? I don't think SSL should have marked Apache in such a way.
Here is the link if you are interested in reading it.

Here is the link if you are interested in reading it.

Apache *is* the web server of choice for the web. IBM, Sun, and others
have used it extensively. Not surprisingly there are a few exploits,
most old and forgotten however there are companies that do not upgrade
their versions quickly. There was a worm if you had gcc installed more
than 1 year ago.

Due to the power of Apache there are several sites that have holes by
the application and few make that distinction. I probably wouldn't as a
security expert so that people focus on the web server first,
applications and all.

Are you sure it's ext2? Could it possibly be ext3, or some other kind of

Have you tried doing the following if you *are* sure it's ext2

It's possible something has been damaged ont he partition, and an fsck
will fix it.

Try running one and see what happens.

Could be a problem. An ext3 filesystem can be mounted as ext2 in an

Any pointers again on how I can get around this problem and mount the

Lastly the thought to create a new RH 9.0 installed partition on hdb
then attempt to mount the relevant directory of the old RH8.0 partition.
Hoping to avoid this long way around!!

If you're going that far... Just boot the RH8.0 or RH9 CD and type 'linux
rescue' at the initial prompt. It will among other things try to find all
the Linux partitions for you and mount them, you can then 'cp' to your
heart's content. The rescue mode has a fairly complete set of tools and ..
well they don't call it rescue mode for nothin'

[SLUG] allowing/disabling ftp access by user type, how ?

2003-10-10 Thread Voytek
RH73, ProFTPD

I have several users that run web pages, they need ftp access ;
then, I have more users whose mail we get, and, they pop their mail off the
server.

neither users have shell access, with /shell/false (whatever the correct
syntax is)

so, everything is OK, but, potentially, my email users could ftp to their
home directory

I'd like to prevent ftp access for mail users, but, leave as is (allowed)
to 'webmasters' users.

where do I do that ? somewhere in RedHat stuff ? ProFTP stuff ? ?

tried googling, so far without any success to this issue

say, once upon a time, when I typed 'google.com' I got google.com;
now, I type 'google.com' but, I get 'google.com.au'; who/where does that ?
