[SLUG] revisited PVR

2004-07-05 Thread Kevin Saenz
Hi all,
I have just bought a new beastie with a Vision Plus DTV card, after a
bit of reading over the weekend I have got the card running under
Mandrake 10. There was a fair bit to configure now I am wondering if
anyone here has used mythtv using a DTV card? Also does anyone have a
channel.conf for xine for the sydney area? In particular one with all
the channels for DTV.

Thanks
Kevin

If you download the manual for that board, its called the Asus BlueMagic
PCI slot. Proprietary to Asus for future Asus add in cards. Compliant
with the PCI spec however, so it will still take standard PCI cards.

Whats different?? No idea so far.

Anyone got any pointers on how to make foreign characters display in mutt?

I suggest using a UTF-8 character set (en_AU.UTF-8) and a terminal such as
gnome-terminal that supports UTF-8 really well.

 - Jeff
or use the latest (for at least a year) xterm, which has u8 support.
You also need a utf-8 capable font for your xterm.

This question came up on the list in September last year. You may need the
ucs font package for your terminal.

I'd also like to load ISO8859-1 font to give me Polish accents ...

Hey Adam,

1) Get more fonts. My dpkg --get-selections shows

  xfonts-100dpi install
  xfonts-75dpi install
  xfonts-75dpi-transcoded install
  xfonts-a12k12 install
  xfonts-artwiz install
  xfonts-base install
  xfonts-cjk deinstall
  xfonts-cmex-big5p install
  xfonts-cyrillic install
  xfonts-efont-unicode install
  xfonts-gimpers deinstall
  xfonts-greek-ph-75dpiinstall
  xfonts-greek-ph-scalable install
  xfonts-intl-arabicinstall
  xfonts-intl-european install
  xfonts-intl-phonetic install
  xfonts-pex install
  xfonts-scalable install
  xfonts-terminus install
  xfs-xtt install

2) the 'ucs' package (not debian) adds many of the extra glyphs needed for
European and other languages to the fixed font.

Ucs can be obtained from http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/ucs-fonts.html, and if
you run one of the included scripts will break down the huge unicode fixed font
into separate encodings, which is helpful if you want to read or write in just
part of the total set.

3) Add the ucs font directory to your XF86Config-4 as in:-

Section Files
   RgbPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/
   FontPath /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType

I've put the ucs directory where the other fonts are in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts, but put the directory at the top of the files section
so that

its version on the fonts is selected first by the font server.

4) Run 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales' and add locales like en_AU-UTF-8 or
en_US-UTF8 as well as pl_PL and pl_PL-UTF8. You probably have en_AU or en_US at
the moment as your locale. (Check with 'locale'). You may well wish to keep it
that way, but when you write in Polish you could start an xterm (or better,
uxterm) and type 'LANG=pl_PL' to get a Polish environment just in that
terminal.

This set-up works OK for me, with one minor glitch. Realplayer doesn't like the
helvetica font which ucs provides. So to start up rvplayer, I get rid of the
ucs fonts by temporarily blocking them out with 'xset -fp
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs'. Start rvplayer and then restore the ucs
directory by reissuing the command with a plus sign '+fp'.

I think that's more to do with Realplayer being non-free and RH-centric, rather
that with the actual font set-up I have.

[SLUG] OS in Law Firms

2004-07-05 Thread Craig Warner
I have a friend who is in a small Law Partnership in the city, no more
then three legals.

Being a very small firm, their network intrastructure is basic.

Now the partners are reviewing were they are and where they want to be
the future.

Things like case and client management tools are being constantly asked
by my friend and whether they are in the OS world.

I've look at Debian packages but does anyone know or have experience in
OS in small law firms? Or would like to take on the sales job for OSS
here?

[SLUG] startx problems...

2004-07-05 Thread Michael Fox
Hi,

A friend has asked me to help him with a problem. I've been looking
into a little today and have managed to solve some of the issues,
except for the last nagging thing.

Everytime we launch startx it does the following;

Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/,
removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,
removing from list!

waiting for X server to shut down

Looking back over the warnings and errors we see the following also.

(WW) The directory /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/ does not exist.
Entry deleted from font path.

If I hash out the CID stuff in the XF86Config, that error disappears
but the other stuff before the server shutsdown still appear.

I am guessing something is not installed or a script needs to be ran.
Fonts exist in the Speedo and Type1 dirs.. as I checked.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Just a guess, have you tried hashing out Speedo and Type1 from
the config file?

That might help to see if there is any other problems it's not
telling.

[SLUG] X11 Font?

2004-07-05 Thread Malik Jayawardena

G'day,

Just trying to run a piece of X11 software in Fedora Core 2 which used
to work in RH 7.3.
This software uses hardware OpenGL using the nVidia driver.

Anyway I keep getting this error:

"Font not found: -*-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-*-480-*-*-*-*-*-*No font
found for GL"

..when trying to run the software.

We use the same nVidia driver on both distros, but it seems that only
Fedor C2 has this problem.
I'm guessing it's just an X11 font thing, but if anyone has any idea
where I can get this font from to install (rpm, etc), or if it's not
the problem, any idea how ot fix it, that would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
-Mal

[SLUG] umask and useradd

2004-07-05 Thread Hilton De Meillon
Hi All,

I want to sync a filesystem over rsync/ssh. the filesystem is /home. I
do not want to use the root user to sync this filesystem.

How can I set the system up so that I can sync using a normal user that
has access to all home directories without having to constantly chown
and chmod the /homedirectories to grant access to this normal user ?.

I was thinking umask but does useradd use umask ?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hilton.
