[SLUG] VLC to TV

2009-01-07 Thread Ben Donohue

Hi all,

I'm looking to setup a pc with an output to a tv (big flatscreen) to
play video files. Sort of like home theatre.

or video files over a lan connection from a server.

recording tv is not necessary but may be good.

Is there a Linux distro that does this or do people go for a hardware
appliance?

Thanks
Ben

I have a mac mini with plex on it. PLex is a fork of Xboc Media Center
- originally for the xbox, it has bee ported to linux, great for filing
tv shows and movies and pictures and music, doesn't do TV recording
:(. If you don't care about the later I would recommend having a look
at XBMC

mythbuntu will do most stuff out of the box, add vlc for reliable
playback of weird format videos.

Thanks Ben, that's a wicked setup you've got. Someone mentioned
http://www.freenas.org/ in a later post - I think I'll have a play
with that, just expand an old mobo I've got lying around.

Oh, and you misspelt pr0n. ;-)

Thanks for the correction :-p

Sonia.
Just noticed that office works is selling 1TB western digital external
drives for $178.

seems to be ~ $10 more than the cheapest bare drive I could find.

As others have enthused, mythtv on your choice of distro.
I'd never go without myth either HOWEVER the actual graphics performance is
aweful. Even on high end nvidea cards the display jitters, movies are 'OK'
footy or Motor Racing etc is terrid.
Even modest hardware is distinctly better and high end hardware eg sony bravia
is much smoother.

We've tried Core2, AMD-X2, Intel and Nvidia graphics: Mobo, 8500, 8600 without
significant -aaah's

Hey,

Sounds like you're doing something wrong in the setup...
My combined front/backend has an AMD 780G chipset mobo with onboard
HD3200 graphics and an AMD 4850e CPU (45W, low power dual core 2.5GHz)
and outputs to a 1080p display without issue [0] including audio over
HDMI.
MythTV is crisp, clear and smooth, including motorsports (E.g. F1 on TenHD).

It may be worth starting a thread and comparing configurations.

cheers,
Owen.

[0] Almost. One remaining display driver bug.

Definately sounds like a setup issue my myth box is probably the least
powerful here p3 1ghz, 1gb of ram, geforce 4, and I can watch and record
digital, (not and true hd 1080p), and hd Xvids no problems.

[SLUG] .ssh/config and setting user names for hosts

2009-01-07 Thread Mark Walkom
I know I can set a per host user or a default global username, but what if I
want to set a global default and then have specific usernames for a handful
of hosts?

eg;
User mark

Host host1
Host host2
Host host3
Host host4
Host host5
user dummy
Host host6
Host host7
user sysop

I have this sort of setup at the moment but it seems the per host user's are
being overwritten by the top user entry.
Am I right in this assumption or is there a way around it?

Thanks,
Mark

Try this:

Host host5
User dummy

Host *
User mark
